This method actually broke my brand new oxo cookie scoop. It broke the soldering that held the blade to the vertical post so now the post just rotates and the blade stays put.

Thank you! I was about to toss my scoop across the room! The arm has gotten stuck somehow and while it was in the right "off" position, it couldn't clear the mid point of the scoop. I popped it open further and then used your trick to rest the arm.

It has to be reset at the gear on the opposite end of the handle from the scoop. Watch how it works and then adjust it accordingly by prying the tab apart far enough to release the gear. Once you have it in the correct setting squeeze the tab back in place with channel locks or pliers. You may have to adjust it a few times before you get the correct setting but don’t let that frustrate you. Keep trying and you’ll figure it out. If the gear itself, or the teeth the gear turns on are damaged or worn, save yourself some time and get another one. Remember, you get what you pay for. The ones at the dollar store, or similar places, are pretty much junk. Pampered chef makes a pretty good one but I’ve had to readjust mine occasionally, especially if using on refrigerated cookie dough. Hope this helps!

I guess this method doesn't work for all brands. I had to pry the metal piece up at the bottom of the scoop and adjust the teeth.
