Okay, the war in Starship troopers is not 'everlasting'; both the book and first film cover only the start of the war, and we never get beyond one generation or see the war end. In the later films the Federation, it is shown to still be doing its best to win, despite the fact they seem to be losing.
@mutskun
@mutskun 4 ай бұрын
True, though we see the war continuing at the end of the film, with newer generations filling the places of Rico and Carmen. Plus the propaganda at the end does state "they'll keep fighting and they'll win," meaning this war is probably not close to ending. "Everlasting" may have been a bit of an exaggeration, my bad. The federation uses the idea of the bugs threatening their "way of life" to keep the people angry at an outside enemy instead of letting them get angry at the government. I'm sure that if they did end up winning the war against the bugs, they'd just find someone else to fight. It's kind of like Oceania in 1984, constantly "at war" to keep the people focussed on outside threats.
@Thrans2311
@Thrans2311 4 ай бұрын
@@mutskun I'd point out that all forms of government talk about the 'outside threat' that threatens the citizens way of life. We pay taxes as protection against criminals (outside the war) that want our stuff, other nations (outside the nation) that want our land, and space bugs (outside the species) that want our planets. As for using external conflict to distract from internal conflict, Britan got into WW1 for just that reason; so, I don’t view it as anything more sinister that what we already live with. The fact the Federation is using (and needs to use) propaganda to encourage volunteer service is something we see mirrored in most of the western world. And unlike Helldivers means Starship Troopers more palatable to live in. After all, while the book shows Starship Troopers as something like a Natural Rights focuses Roman Republic, Helldivers is run by an Authoritarian Corporate Bureaucracy. (The Starship Trooper films vary in their depiction of the Federation, from Verhoeven’s attempt of satire that’s more parody, to Starship Troopers 3: Marauder a.k.a. how the Federation found religion.) But your point on what would happen if the Federation won against the bugs may be true; in the book the opening chapters cover a lighting in raid against the ‘Skinnies’ another alien species that fell into the bugs sphere of influence and are attacked in something like a proxy war with a clandestine raid. But the book also points out that when Juan Rico signs up the Federation military doesn’t really want more recruits, and is struggling to find some of them appropriate work to fulfil the military constitutional requirement to accept all volunteers. So, the veterans who control the vote in Starship Troopers may or may not vote to avoid further wars; so I’m not sure I agree with the comparison to Oceania or 1984. The fact that the events and world in the book, and movies differ so greatly certainly only confuses things further.
@katyushamarikov8819
@katyushamarikov8819 4 ай бұрын
@@mutskunBut they aren't using the "at war" to keep people focused on outside threats. Most people do not want to sign up for military service and they do not have to. If we are just going on the first movie then you can see that the government takes responsibility for the disastrous invasion. The head of the military even steps down to be replaced and a new strategy is adopted. They are literally not fascist in the least with people like Rico's parents being able to entirely distance themselves from the political side of things and be openly anti-war. If your analysis is only "they have propaganda and grey uniforms" then that's pretty shallow since every society has propaganda trying to convince people to volunteer for service. They were literally recruitment ads like in modern day for the military of any country. It was literally a liberal democracy with limited suffrage. It was so equal that men and women were able to shower together without any sort of problems. The big problem with the movie is that the director did not read the book, made it so that a liberal democracy was fighting an existential threat, and the humans were all portrayed as very good people. If you are going to look at the books then the original military government was created in response to a coup by intellectuals and scientists that failed. Before the coup that tried to establish a technocracy, the world was falling apart because the laws became too liberal when it came to dealing with children. Without structure and boundaries, gangs of under 18s were terrorizing the streets until they would turn 18 and be tossed in prison or executed. The government was openly against people joining since they only had so many useful slots to fill. Rico in the books only qualified for two things K9 training and mobile infantry. Dogs hated him so that left one option for him. He started with something like 2000 people in his training group and they ended with like 200. This world wasn't without issue, some people who washed out did attack those who were serving later in the book and there was some apparent animosity between the people who were not citizens and those who were, at least on the fringes. The thing is that the soldiers who beat up the men later were the ones punished since citizens were held to a higher standard than civilians. This fits in with the idea that those who are supposed to govern need to be held accountable just like the scene in the movie when the head of the military steps down. If your point is that neither have universal suffrage, that's a fair critique. They were not supposed to be entirely fair for the people who did not want serve since the point of governance according to each system is to be of service to those you are governing.

Haven't watched the video yet, but this is such a dumb title. It looks like you put a lot of effort into this video, but you're completely undermining it. We're so far past the "are games art" argument, there is noone making it in good faith worth taking seriously anymore. It just makes the entire video seem more juvenile than it needs to be.
@mutskun
@mutskun 4 ай бұрын
As someone who went to a pretty prestigious game development school for a couple of years, this topic is still very much discussed and there were several students there who disagreed with games being art. If you hear someone make an argument against games being art, you should take them seriously and either accept their opinion or try and debate it (in a friendly way) I did my research for this video, and there are definitely still people who don’t see games as art (at least the big AAA titles)
@loolool222
@loolool222 4 ай бұрын
I agree that there are still tons of people that feel that way, but there are also still millions of people who get angry at Duchamp's 'Fountain' and point to it as an example of the degradation of "art" in the modern era, both completely missing the point, and trying to use it as a bludgeon against their subjective disinterest in certain themes, topics, or mediums being explored. What art is to any given person is subjective, and arguing for or against that doesn't go anywhere. Exploring a topic, and expanding upon what it means to you is a great way of potentially bringing people around to your way of thinking, which is exactly what you did in this video. I don't think you're wrong in your approach, but you do cheapen it by pointing to a pretty tired and meaningless argument that people only frame in the way of "are games art" as a bad-faith way of bringing up drawing comparisons to what they do consider "art". I hope that makes sense, I don't disagree with your video, or your argument, I just think the title reduces it to less than what it is.@@mutskun

It is rare to find a new creator interested in SCP. The current numbers are slowly dwindling and it's exciting to see a new face attempt to unravel this treasure trove of compelling stories. There are a few points I would like to add on to: -Due to "acts" performed by the author of the Dr. Bright character and its nature as a self insert most of the community has chosen to disassociate the character from the name all ties to the name. The proposed new name is Dr. Elias Shaw -Dr.Clef being unable to be viewed is the fact that his face is obscured by various animal heads in photos. -Certain members of the O5 Council (again depending on cannon) possess anomalous properties.. -The image on the right during the Administrator section is O5-1 from SCP-001 "The Ouroboros Cycle" -Not all amnestics are derived from SCP-3000. Those that are, are highly effective. -A meme is actually an infectious idea observation is not required. Conversely an antimeme is an idea that can't be spread. -There is no SCP-055. -There is a somewhat collective project called MetaFoundation which has a bunch of cannons all in one (including OG43). -SCP "codenames" are not cannon and are just there for us the readers. -MR.5000 never misses (tanhony) -You can technically post an article without review, it will most likely be downvoted to deletion unless it's really good. -The SCP-173 image was allowed to be used just not commercially so to save everyone the trouble it was taken down. -There are a few more but they were mostly nitpicks. I really enjoyed this video. I hope you cover more SCP. If you want to cover smaller SCPs in a longer video, you could do a deep dive into broad categories like a specific GOI, concepts like amnestics or characters. Similar in fashion to how The Exploring Series structures their videos.

I’m not even a quarter of the way through, but I already love where you’re going. The best thing that could have happened to Eldritch/Lovecraftian/Cosmological horror is humanity’s greater understanding of our universe. We still don’t know what we don’t know, but where Lovecraft could only imagine most of outer space, we have seen it. We have seen black holes and quasars and nebulae, we have found that the universe is ever expanding, we have learned about time dilation and the possibility of other dimensions. We have more terrifying tools now, built from our knowledge, and the SCP files, when good, utilize this advantage and create eldritch horror beyond what Lovecraft and others at the time were capable. It’s awesome to watch a genre develop.
