This is what I've been missing! My regular EQ was chopping just enough in certain areas and way too much in moments when I didn't need it to! I really really appreciate you!

I have protools HD I believe the 12.5. For some reason I notice my audio recordings sound clearer than other Daws? I know they say all Daws are the same, and that it's just the plugins that you use. but something about the quality of Protools that sounds more clear

Such lovely advice- thank you! Long term Pro Tools user here, but from a long time ago, so my name should be Rusty! Ha! Love these quick answer to quick easy questions, because either A. I've forgotten how to do it (hahaha!) or B. It keeps changing on me- location, location, location! Hahaha! Imagine software that does that- what a big surprise! Haha! Seriously, congratulations on all your success, 5Piece! Very well presented, polished, pleasant, clear and professional! Thanks again!

Do you gain stage after you clip 1 or 2 dbs? Or do you leave it be? Also, on windows ( I know you're on mac), you can hit the shift key to override standard clips 2 increment thing and fine tune it to the number you want, just an fyi.

And are you using hpf for 2 track beat ?
@5piece
@5piece 7 күн бұрын
I discuss my approach to mixing vocals over 2-track beats in this video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNZnjJBjtdKwYIU.htmlsi=2sxwiuxTms068vwt I typically avoid excessive filtering (and really, filtering at all) unless its absolutely necessary. Most times, I 'm leaving 2-tracks as they are as anything I do will affect everything and usually be much more destructive than it is helpful (unless of course the situation calls for it)
@enriquemccomas6273

So when you use hpf what if it causes phase issues ?
@5piece
@5piece 7 күн бұрын
You'd hopefully use your ears and judgement to decide in the moment. Every situation is unique and requires its own special attention and decision-making. While I can understand that some viewers may misunderstand aspects of what I'm saying - I hope they can understand that just because I show off 5 specific steps doesn't mean you HAVE to do all 5 of these steps every time. I explain this towards the end of the video at 21:46 Should I Always Make These Moves? There can very well be situations where you don't use a step at all - such as not filtering if you find it introduces audible phase issues - or not solving frequency masking because there isn't any taking place, and so on. Hopefully this helps.

@@JTFullersounds like you learned the hard way, which I imagine makes you appreciate the new, easier ways. We really have it made now and with AI on the come up, it’s only going to get easier 👀 It’s funny tho - I love that analog stuff especially for production. I have so many plugins - but if I want to make a beat, I’m more creative with just a single synth than 1,000 VSTs. Limitations / restrictions can enable MASSIVE creativity. 💪🏼 plus most of these digital producers are trying to sound analog anyway so may as well cut to the source 😂

I will say the bypass panning part is confusing as it's not really clear when you have stopped the bypass. Then it goes to the empty section and it's just not very fluid. Would be nice to just have more of an indication that we switched.
@5piece
@5piece 14 күн бұрын
The song’s arrangement has a break/mute in the middle (you can see the silence printed on the stems) so I put the text on screen while things are bypassed, and when it’s not bypassed AKA enabled, there is no text. Not sure how I could’ve made it more obvious but I suppose I could’ve let it play for another loop just to ensure you caught it. That being said, I encourage you to try it in your own sessions to see and hear it in full effect as the goal here was moreso to inspire you to try something you haven’t done rather than have you listen to me do it over and over 👀
@mattstopa9436
@mattstopa9436 14 күн бұрын
It would would just be much more effective if you did a before and after. The panning is very subtle so it's hard to hear. I know others would appreciate the change in the future. If you choose not to do that that's fine, that's your choice.

Yes, of course, casual compressors reacts aggressive to kicks, and pump the whole spectrum when kick hits, but sometimes, in some genres this pumping effect sounds cool, creates a dynamic energy image, and final master sounds “lifeless” without it. Similar situation when during mixing kick & bass in bass-heavy styles, we use multiband SC to remove conflict super clean, yes, we remove conflict, but lowend still sounds weak, because our ears wants to hear this two power instruments super separated, with certain pump time

These vocals already processed and EQed. This is not how home studio producers can get good results. This is not an actual vocal eq video. This is just polishing . Skip.
@5piece
@5piece 21 күн бұрын
You're accusations are incorrect - these are raw recordings from a literal basement home studio. Not sure what makes you say they're processed, especially considering that KZfaq applies its own volume normalization to audio. I'll admit that the artist/producer who sent them has better recording gear than most (using Neumann TLM103 Mic into an Avalon VT737 Preamp which has a built-in EQ and Compressor, then into an Apogee interface) not to mention they have a treated vocal booth The recording itself definitely sounds BETTER than the average hobbyist recording on a cheap mic, but EVERYTHING covered in the video related to EQ moves to consider making is applicable, and are EQ moves that I make in every mix (give or take), including for artists recording recording on more modest gear. Is it the WORST possible sounding example ever? No, I agree that it sounds great from the jump - but that's actually what SHOULD happen if you record vocals well, with the right gear, in a treated environment. if you want, you can watch my other EQ or vocal chain videos if you don't like this example as some were recorded on more entry-level set-ups, such as my FREE vocal chain video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9iqnrhz0cXUlmQ.htmlsi=sEogvNxQ2hh39di8

You do this after you have mixed the song ?
@5piece
@5piece 21 күн бұрын
What are you referring to exactly by "do this"? If you're referring to shooting the video after I mixed the song, then technically YES but of course after removing what I did in the mix and basically re-creating it during each section of the video to demonstrate the points I'm making (otherwise my videos would be hours long of me working through things). Plus sometimes I make a decision in the moment that I later, after a break and listen on fresh ears, decide to remove/undo so I'd rather demonstrate something closer to the final product with committed decisions. If you meant something else, let me know, and I'll try to help,
