I was going to "crack a joke" but Thank You, Miss Pea, as this is very serious I am so glad you tackled this subject, as their more cases there and women [men too!] that have HIV and if you want "relations", there are stages/protocol that you have to do. Belle today, was very knowledgeable and empathic to people's plight. This discussion and video should be mandatory for any and all ex-pats, or those traveling there as a "newbie", or "First Timer" Great content....Opened my eyes and mind to even more of what is going on over there...Peace

If you have a new partner have him/her, or perhaps both of you tested as soon as practicable. Of course the above only works if both are not having other partners. My dad lived with HIV for 20 years on various drug treatments, yet it eventually became AIDS , it is an excruciating and enervating disease to witness . Wow, that's something I hadn't expected in the Philippines. I never would expect someone there to go about pricking people with an infected needle. I do know of a case here where someone was doing that. They pretty much spent the remainder of their life in prison. So, I guess it would be wise for anyone who intends to sleep around there to start on PREP or some other such hiv blocker prior to going to the Philippines. Although that probably applies everywhere. Great content and timely topic. But one not-addressed question for which I would like an answer: Is it legal for tourists to bring with them at-home HIV test kits? What about for other STIs? (I'm not sure if even these kits are available.)

So I see an awful catch 22 situation here. No filipina wants to talk about body count firstly, so if you meet a girl and she becomes your long term girlfriend, how to convince her that you should both go get a test at the same time so you both have peace of mind for the future? Not easy to negotiate. We have home testing kits in the UK now that are free and rapid in terms of getting the results, it would make me feel a little uneasy not really knowing there and I wouldn't want to use a condom if it was my new girlfriend who I was doing the deed with on a daily basis. Tricky situation to deal with..

Thanks for bringing a controversial topic to our attention. We in the U.S. have pretty much reached an understanding of how HIV works and are comfortable with prevention and treatment. I guess one more concern I have when visiting the Philippines is exposure to TB. Great job for explaining the cultural impacts.

Wow it’s good you bring this up Miss Pea. I know a lot of Americans are going to the Philippines to vacation or travel and some go to meet girls. Just be careful. Stay away from the bar scene and make sure you know the girl well before you unzip your pants.

Because the philippines is an extremely religious country, birth control and contraception are not promoted . Something as simple as a condom will help prevent diseases. I personally have had problems trying to find a product that fits, so I have to bring my own. If divorce was made available, then perhaps these separated individuals would be able to be in monogamous relationships instead of a casual liaison . Of course homosexuality is spreading like wildfire across the philippines, and anal sex is one of the ways that aids is being spread . Illegal drug use is rare as many can't afford it but do happen. People have caught it from blood transfusion back in the early days of the virus but still occur from contaminated sources. Risky behavior will or could lead to being infected, so be safe and know the character of the person that you are with.

This is why saying it's just a "gay" disease needs to stop. It's an everyone and anyone disease. Saying it's just a gay disease makes non gay sexual encounters dangerous. Gay/straight, AID's don't care. Be safe and be smart everyone.

Hi Pea this was a good topic to bring up. Another good reason for using condoms. I know a few girls here that have been with several different guys that sleep with as many girls as they can. These are the girls to stay away from as you never know what you might catch. It is too bad it costs so much to be tested for HIV. I have had blood work done for several tests and only cost 600 pesos so 10,000 pesos for just one simple test is rather extreme. This is something the government should be stepping in on to help people here. Keep smiling and stay safe

It’s one of the hypocrisies of the Philippines. Religious beliefs say no sex before marriage yet they use the religious argument for not using free birth control and condoms. This leads to the widespread epidemic of various diseases as well as single mothers. I’ve been going to the Philippines often on for 50 years and the corruption and the government just ensures that things will never get any better. People vote for real politicians and celebrities.
