Agreed. The reserves of the Yuzovsky field could supply Ukraine's needs for the next 50 years at the very high rates consumed in the late 1980s. Russia does not need more NG reserves, but it does want to control competition and keep Ukraine its vassal state. Production fell dramatically and Russia stepped in with low cost NG. When Ukraine fell behind in payments because of the miserable economy of the 1990s in the old Soviet bloc countries, Putin made the deal to trade the NG debt owed to Russia for Ukraine's strategic and many tactical weapons that were left following the scrapping required by the arms reduction agreements and elimination of nuclear weapons. Putin tried manipulating European nations in 2022 by withholding NG. In Summer 2021, Russia significantly raised the NG price to European, a season when NG prices were typically lower and consumers would be filling their local reserves for the following winter. Perhaps Russia was looking at gaming the market. And later Russia, with NG prices still high, had pretty much cut off the flow of NG through Nord Steam 1 prior to its destruction. But this came back to bite Russia when large LNG facilities were quickly put into use and imports from the USA and elsewhere were actually lower than the Russian NG prices in 2021. Besides the silica iron ore, coal and NG, it has been said eastern Ukraine is mineral rich in lithium, nickel, copper and cobalt. Did the USA come to Ukraine's aid in 2022 to protect present and future business interests? Quite unlikely. The value of USA company assets in Russia far exceeded those in Ukraine in 2022. And the same is true in regards to new petroleum/ NG production. Participation in the Russian Sakhalin 1 and 2 projects were valued more than the Yuzovsky field. I saw another report on KZfaq that said that before the war, Ukraine had the storage capacity, and pipelines to supply western Europe with all of the natural gas they needed. If Ukraine joined the European Union, and developed that orange area that you're talking about; Ukraine could replace Russia as the natural gas supplier for the EU. This would ruin the Russian economy, not good for Putin.

As mentioned, Russian has so much fossil resources that Ukrainian assets are almost negligible so it is doubtful capturing coal gas and oil is the reason for Russian aggression. One of my retirement obsessions is tracking & projecting oil & gas resource depletion. Russia's onshore Western Siberian gas resources are rapidly depleting (I wrote a paper on the topic for US Dept of Commerce). Nearly all of its remaining gas resources are either offshore under the Kara Sea or Eastern Siberia. Developing the remaining gas resources are comparatively expensive. I believe that Putin would fight a war to capture a cheaper gas resource and deny Europe access to Ukrainian gas, presuming that the tight gas field you mentioned can be developed economically into a major producer. I believe that Russian oil production is in the early stages of fairly steep decline. Without oil & gas production, the Russian empire will collapse.

My opinion is Russian motivation for this conflict is NATO expansionism. Putin and many people living in Russia think the end of the USSR was a great tragedy. He has worked hard to restore Russian pride. Ukraine is a redline because a NATO member state with such a long border next to Russia is toxic. If China built bases in Mexico we would be going crazy. Same thing.

I'm also a geologist and have been curious about the gas fields which most observers don't mention. Still, as you say, Ukrainian gas is fairly minimal compared to Russian gas.

Westerners quite often relate global conflicts to economics and natural resources. You didn't do that but left it open for discussion. That is great. The simple reason for this war is NATO's expansion. Period. Under radical left politicians and administrations who want to export weird culture to Russia and by extension to other parts of the world all appeals, notices and warnings by Russia were ignored. I believe real life lore channel did a video on what Russia wants in Ukraine. It boiled down to these resources, and primarily the resources allowing Ukraine to replace Russia as the supplier for Europe. Coupled with the energy transition, this would cripple the Russian economy. Well, I guess that plan backfired. But yea, might want to check that video out.
