Bloody shame that while this is indeed a terrific song and version, similar to the version we sing at our monthly Gathering, it is alas NOT a sea chantey in any respect. People I know that refer to this as one simply have no idea of the difference, and are often the ones who now refer to Irish drinking songs as "chanteys".
@SaltydogshantyАй бұрын
You are correct. We don’t say that this song is a shanty, either. We have two pub sings, one is all maritime, and this song was sung in the broader traditional/folk pub sing. The videos from both are all on the same channel. There is a playlist of The Dubliner that is our maritime pubsing. Thank you for listening and I hope you find more of our songs to sing along to.

It was OK. But when you have to read it from your iPhone, then you DON'T believe it. It's fucking FAKE. And we can not believe in you! Know it. Believe in it. Own it. Only then will I sing it with you!

I looked up Mingulay. This island in the Outer Hebrides was abandoned over a hundred years ago--which shows you how old this song is.
@Saltydogshanty3 ай бұрын
This song was written about 25 years after the people abandoned the island, to commemorate them. The people of Mingulay did not sing this themselves.

None of the crowd speak Russian, and had not rehearsed the song, so we did the best we could. (and yes, beer was involved.) It's always a delight when a song leader has something new to teach us of international or historical significance. Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy perusing the pub sing videos on our channel.

Not sure offhand, but maybe there is an Irish themed bar along the San Antonio Riverwalk, or in Austin? Galveston and Corpus Christie have some historic ships as museums, so there might be people there who know and enjoy historic sailing music. Good luck!
