The next time I come home to Ireland from where I’ve lived in Manchester U.K. for 23 years, I’m going to get a LEAP card and I’m going to try to fully explore the LUAS lines as much as I can and to see just how it compares to Manchester’s Metrolink Tram network - in this video, that I’m playing on my iPad, I’ve enjoyed following along the stops on the map on my iPhone

37:33. I am surprised to hear Spanish people speaking. Are there many Spaniards in Dublin?
@yermanoffthetelly5 ай бұрын
A lot of Spanish students visit Ireland and study in private language schools, especially during the summer but at any one time there are about 35k Spanish students in the country (mostly Dublin but also Galway and Cork) There is also a small population of about 12k Spanish people that live here permanently.

I remember when I was a child travelling when this line originally opened in the 1940s, had my mum come along and we ran up and down all the tram routes in Dublin till we were both so exhausted my mum had to take the day off work for a straight week to rest.

Is there any need to use the bell before leaving the station? I also think there is the horn that is only used outside the streets. Buses donot use their horns when leaving the bus stop and only if absoulutely necessary. I never use my bell on my bike except for the reasons above. And nice to see a girl doing the work for an hour/

I love the fact that outside of Dublin city centre, the LUAS tram line turns into a proper railway line, as it does with the Metrolink on the Bury Line out of Manchester Victoria - it used to be a real hassle getting to Rochdale or Bury for a day out from Manchester, now it’s so easy
@michaeljohndennis2231 Жыл бұрын
Comparing the LUAS Trams in Dublin to the Metrolink Trams here in Manchester U.K., aside from the fact that LUAS is a relatively newer system and therefore not as extensive, they are nicer than even the newer Metrolink Trams - the platforms at stops are much lower than the Metrolink, which can cause some issues at some stops such as at Abbey St going towards Hueston on the Red line (Wynns Hotel) - contactless (touch in and touch out using your debit card) would be a useful feature which is what I’m so used to now, taking out my phone to pay

Last time I was home in Ireland from Manchester in October 2022 (where I’ve lived for 21 years) for my 52nd birthday celebrations, I stayed at the Clayton Ballsbridge (Bewley’s Hotel) which is also close to the (enclosed) Poor Clares Monastery in Simmonscourt Rd behind the RDS where I visited my friends Sr. Brigid & Sr. Carmel, the nearest DART being Sandymount - I found this very convenient for visiting extended family in both Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath and around the Dublin area - I’m most impressed by the current DART offering compared to when I used to live in Ireland, as every time I come home, the DART trains seem to get longer, so I always manage to get a seat, even during rush hour - compare that to going out to the Trafford Centre on Manchester Metrolink Trams outside of peak hours, not a chance - I very much look forward to coming home again and hopefully, this will be on the high-speed rail tunnel from Holyhead to Dublin Connolly on a connecting train from Manchester Victoria
@michaeljohndennis2231 Жыл бұрын
I’ve not travelled the full length of the LUAS lines the last few times I’ve come home to Ireland from Manchester on SailRail from Holyhead, but as my family live in Dunshaughlin Co. Meath, which is also quite close to M3 Parkway Irish rail station and the LUAS terminus at Broombridge via Clonsilla, the other LUAS connection option being Bus Éireann/Transport for Ireland 109 from Dunshaughlin as far as Navan Rd, I’m looking at more suitable travel card options like a Leap Card when I next come home on a visit to Ireland - I typically come home for 5 days at a time and I also use the DART to visit friends when I’m over
@michaeljohndennis2231 Жыл бұрын
The sooner the M3 Parkway line gets extended to Navan the better, as my family live in Dunshaughlin Co Meath - and as I’ll be coming home on visits to family on SailRail (or high speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea - we live in hope lol) from Manchester via Holyhead, it will make life so much easier - they have shelved the Holyhead - Dublin rail tunnel so many times and yet, every time a new ferry or freight ship is put on the route, it fills up rapidly, as people are getting fed up of air travel - if the Irish government want to ban short haul flights between Ireland and the U.K. they have to give people an alternative, as P&O ferries don’t take foot passengers on thier services from Liverpool (Birkenhead) and passenger trains from Manchester Victoria only go as far as Liverpool Lime St, which is as crazy as not having passenger ferries up as far as the Custom House on the Liffey and as crazy as closing Dun Laoire port when they have extended Dublin Port to take cruise ships (which operate from central Liverpool as well)
@michaeljohndennis2231 Жыл бұрын
I just wish they would extend the LUAS all the way past the Gibson Hotel/02 Arena up to the Irish Ferries/Stena Terminals at Dublin Port (North Wall) as getting from and to Dublin Connolly/Busaras is a real hassle - I travel on SailRail from Manchester via Chester and Holyhead and I’ve got family in Dunshaughlin Co Meath so this would make a huge difference
@joshuaW562111 ай бұрын
They should also extend the Luas to Rathcoole, Blessington, Foxrock, Bray and Enniskerry. I hear there’s talk of extensions to Poolbeg and Charlestown, but seriously we need more tram and railway lines in this country.
@michaeljohndennis223111 ай бұрын
@@joshuaW5621 in all my 21 years of visits home to Ireland on SailRail from Holyhead, I’m wondering the same thing too, even if there is a DART to Bray & Greystones - there are freight lines around Dublin Port that could easily have passenger trains on them, as they have already proven is doable with commuter trains using the Phoenix Park Tunnel - their mismanagement has also seen poorly designed bridges that cannot raise for ships, that even if the Liffey channel was properly dredged, it still would not allow foot passenger only ferries and seaplanes to sail further up the Liffey as far as the Custom House - they have also (again) shelved the high-speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin to complement HS2 here in the U.K., even though the rail infrastructure here in Manchester is a disaster - a dedicated high speed rail line across the North of England to connect Hull, York, Leeds, Manchester and Holyhead to connect the ECML to the WCML is also essential
@joshuaW562111 ай бұрын
@@michaeljohndennis2231 yeah Ireland’s transport system sucks. It’s so bad, Dublin Airport doesn’t even have a rail connection at the moment. Sure there’s plans for a metro line that you hear about in the occasional update, but when are they gonna start building it? Construction was due to start last year, but after being delayed by Covid I don’t even know the new date for it. When will it start?
@michaeljohndennis2231 Жыл бұрын
In my 21 years of coming home to Ireland from the U.K. one of the best things has been the massive improvements to the DART in Dublin, so much more comfortable and safer, but the biggest difference is that they have so much more carriages and even if much longer, always ensures that I find a seat, in comparison to the LUAS or the Manchester Metrolink - I just wish they would build a DART or LUAS underground to the Irish Ferries Terminal at Dublin Port as I come home on the SailRail from Holyhead and it’s hard enough struggling with a suitcase without being crammed in like sardines into tiny buses to get into Dublin City Centre which anyway, should be going further along the Liffey at high tide if the Liffey was properly dredged up to the Custom House/Tara St
@joshuaW5621 Жыл бұрын
Imagine hearing places like Rathcoole, Foxrock, Loughlinstown, Shankill, Bray or Enniskerry in the Luas. I know those places aren’t currently served by the Luas, but it’s a fun what if idea.
