Thank you so much for the beautiful footage and interesting voice-over! Iceland has been a place I wanted to visit for more than a decade. I was completely hooked on Arnaldur Indriđason's crime novels at the time😊. I even recognized the name Thingvellir, it's the location in one of his novels! But- it is an expensive place and, as you mention, the tourist masses are intimidating...

Wow! Thanks for the wonderful views of Iceland. I'll never get there, but it's always been an obsession of mine since discovering Icelandic horses, the sagas, and crime fiction. Now, I could add Photography, birds and botany to my obsessions. You are so lucky to have visited. Was there any visible volcanic action? I've been whale watching just south of me off Dana Point, CA, so I know how awesome that experience is!

I was surprised how affected I was by seeing the whales. Before we set off it was the thing I was looking forward to the least, but it was awesome. The most recent eruptions were on the peninsula very near The Blue Lagoon, but there hadn’t been any activity for a few weeks so we didn’t see anything. I think they just reopened to tourists the last week of June.

Call me pretentious, but I really enjoy literary fiction. I was just at Barnes and Nobles this week, and they had separate sections for thrillers, mysteries, and horror. Seems like a lot of crossover there, but also all these genres could be literary. To me it’s just a descriptor. No need to be snobby about it. I mean, I generally don’t want literary when I’m in the mood for romance, but it’s ok when Jane Austen does it. Then again, I was just telling my kid this week that Jane Austen is more social commentary than romance.

Hi Brian. As soon as I saw your topic today, I thought of Susie Boyt's LOVED AND MISSED--one of my top reads of the year so far--and I was so glad that you included the mom/grandmother, Ruth, from this novel. My list might also include the novel, The Queen of Dirt Island, by Donal Ryan where four generations of women in a family live together and survive and ultimately thrive. The grandmother, Nana, takes in her daughter-in-law, Eileen, and new baby after Eileen is widowed right after she gives birth. This grandmother and mother are just remarkable characters of strength, resilience, and great love. Another one of my top books this year. Terrific video with lots to think about, as always....
