Here, in Canada, cars get eaten alive by rust before the engine can ever show problems. And there is no way to get rid of rust with snow and melting salt...

Hope you don't run into any of those problems. Never owned a KIA. We are Subaru people. We bought a used Forrester that was a loaner car for the dealership. It had less than 5,000 miles. We had concerns too, but the car ended up being pretty good and trouble free until the end (about 12 years later).

New Kias are covered by the 10 year/100k powertrain warranty, but often these vehicles are cheaply built with CVT transmissions that go bad in as little as 40-60k miles. Kia dealerships will often refuse to replace poorly built engines & transmissions even with less than 100k miles. Car buyers in North America should always do their research on new or used vehicles before buying with Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds. Danny said the engines made in the USA for Kias have problems- incorrect. Both Hyundai & Kia use the same low quality supplier for engines & transmissions- JATCO- a Nissan owned Japanese company with manufacturing operations in Thailand, Mexico, China, Japan. There's a reason Kias and Hyundais are cheaper when new. Their used resale value is also low due to poor reliability and powertrain failure after 80k miles and dealerships that refuse to honor the warranty. Hyundais built before 2011 where actually very reliable, but that's when they were much better quality.

We have two a Sportage and a Soul both more than 120k miles. Very reliable vehicles. I change my own oil but uses an OEM oil filter. They still runs like brand new.

Good for you Danny! I was going to purchase one last week also knowing all the bad hype about them. It looked like a super buy for the money. Almost one half the cost of what I drive now! On in my 6th Santa Fe Limited now with 100,000K + miles. Never ANY problems in any. Some of the first one I used to drive like an ASSHOLE, now I’m 76+ and drive slower than a grandma. If the Souls cargo area was at least two times bigger I’d be chugging along in a new Soul today. I live in a 55+ park in Mesa Arizona and there must be 30-40 Souls just in my park and even more all over town. My friend bought a new Soul last year and while driving in the mountains in western New Mexico he hit and killed an elk. A highway patrol was following him and saw the murder. The officer knew for sure my friend was dead at the scene! My friend ended up with only a cut lip!!! The officer stated he was going to ask for a Soul cruiser for his next car! He told my friend he had had similar mishaps 4 times while patrolling the mountain roads the last 5+ years. He was shocked as to the ruggedness of the little Soul. My wife drove an '18 Soul from new for 4 years and 50k miles. We literally did nothing but change the oil and put gas in it - zero problems and still on original tires, brakes & battery when traded in. Was a great car for us.

one thing to remember about cvt tranny's is that the computer in the car controls it, it last longer if it always the same driver drives it all the time the computer remembers your driving style. if you have ever rented a car with a cvt, you will notice the tranny gets confused because there are so many different people driving it. they aren't that bad. just make sure you service it when it's called for! happy trails danny.
