In ancient times people would introduce themselves as such "hello I am Sophia from Naples Italy," why hello Sophia I am Igor from Romania. We should go back to that, then there is no mistake of where u came from.

to be fair the native peoples where not love and peace flower children. they where brutal in their own right and made horrid wars of conquest. besides 2/3 of the native peoples died of decease when the europeans brought over every plague causing virus that toppled empires in the old world. not saying colonialism is good, but it was and it shaped the world today. should we learn all history, and start being proud of our native ancestry? sure but at the same time blaming people that are long ago dead is not productive nor is it right to not accept your european ancestry too. however there are plenty of people who have little to no european ancestry that should keep their languages, and traditions.

My new resource when I tell people I dont like the term hispanic. I am Puerto Rican, Boricua from Boriken the land of the Tainos. I dont need any of us to carry that branding.

This is a very inspiring lecture Professor! If I can, may I use it as a source in a research paper on cultural genocide?

Interesting lecture, however when Professor Bonfil did his profound study and reflexion, the Genome Human Project was incompleted. Recently Mexican Scientist have determined and confirmed the genetic composition of the Mexican Mestizo population, and, on average it does have contributions from Ameridians, Europeans (Mainly from Iberia), it varies depending on the region, and in a minor percentage African genes (4%). Present Mexico is unique and rich, culturally and genetically. With more than 35 World Heritage sites and 11 intangible, it is the country with the largest number in the Americas. Amazing country, great people!,

Please watch the video again and pay attention to the main argument. It is not about a genetic argument of percentage of this versus percentages of that, but a cultural one. The modern version of "mestizaje" is the Mexican version of the US melting pot: everyone gives up their language, history, culture, and adopts this new identity. In both cases the culture of the ruling class was favored over the other ones. In the US, you were meant to adopt US English culture, the English language, their etiquette, their custom, and give up Spanish, French, German, etc. The claim is that something new is coming out. The reality is that it is mostly English culture, with a strong bias towards it, while others are meant to downplay other heritage. The same is seen with Mexican "mestizaje". It only points towards the Mexican-Spanish direction, requiring the giving up of other cultures. We have full access to Spanish culture. Yet for the native nation, we only have an idealize version of the Aztecs. We are allowed to have butcher shop calendars with Cuahutemoc paintings as our native representation. If the US melting pot is being English-American lite, Mexican mestizaje is being Hispanic-Mexican lite.

The United Mexican States population in 2021 is genetically or biologically diverse with the aforementioned contributions, I clarify “on average”, …and “miscegenation” continue to evolve. In the United Mexican States is evident the cultural Syncretism with elements of all its historic processes. Thirty-Five World Heritage Sites recognized by UNESCO, including natural and cultural (prehispanic, colonial and modern). Eleven considered, Intangible Cultural Heritage including music and traditions,. That is Present “Mexico”!, unique and one of the richest countries on the World.

Using that logic, everyone is a mestizo, therefore cultural claims do not matter. There is no "pure race".

This makes a lot of sense. I recall seeing census info where most of Mexico was Native by 1900. Suddenly mestizos are the majority a few decades later. Numerically it is not possible. The difference must be people identifying themselves differently.

And I have full access to Spanish culture. I speak the language. I know where they came from. I have a good idea of where one of the families came from Spain. I don't have full access to Native culture. I don't speak the language. I don't know what the native nation was called. I don't know when they gave up speaking Nahualt. I have to tease out Native practices. This is what mestizaje does. It attempts to kill the indigenous part of you.

and as an answer to your concluding question, i definitely see echoes of mesoamerican way of life whenever id pass through local markets. They call them "Tianguis" which i believe is a derivative of a more ancient nahual term.

Interesting, last month I was in Mexico and my mother in law mentioned she had to purchase Nixtamal for pozole, I had never heard of that word. It blew my mind when it was brought up in this video!!! Thanks

Hi Robert! Consider that your suegra in Mexico and many indigenous people all over the continent use nixtamal. Corn is one of the quintessential elements found throughout Native America. Our Mohawk friends in Canada also use nixtamal in their own type of corn soup similar to Mexican pozole. Here's more information from our cousins to the North. www.fnha.ca/wellness/sharing-our-stories/food-is-medicine-mohawk-corn-and-complex-carbohydrates

Very informative. Roger Ramirez informed me . Good to see your work Dr. Miguel Gutierrez.....would like to send you an invitation to come home (or possibly a Virtual visit ) to celebrate with us the birth of Mestizaje, August 13th, (2021) 500 A.C. (After Conquest). The MAHSM is organizing a event to commemorate this historic benchmark. C/S.
