Yep I've seen the same video solo's where Buddy demonstrates singles from static to absolutely flying, yours look very similar to me. Great work! I'm a 54 yr old, been playing a while now but always looking to improve my technique, I'm taking cues from just about everyone i see on YT who show real freedom and good finger control, along with wrists and arms of course, your right up there with the best of them. Thank you for the great posts and work you're putting in. Brilliant. 🙏

great job! I have been trying to figure out the right hand for years and years. I can see in your right you figured out something. He has that unique pointer finger and I can see him once he gets going using the fingers to pull up on the sticks to gain more speed, I think. I watch Dick Cully he figured it out. If you ever wanna do a lesson on the grip for the right hand I would greatly appreciate it. People always talk about his left hand but never mention the right and it's going just as fast and smooth and under total control and when buddy switched to matched grip on the floor tom he was just as proficient. So anything you wouldn't mind sharing on that right hand grip it would be appreciated. Your doing fantastic, keep going!

Out of all the videos I've seen on traditional grip, yours is the most clearly defined an explanatory. I especially liked your part about implementing the left hand technique in your daily life. When I was in school studying the double bass, my bass teacher told me almost the very same thing to do with the bow, he said carry it around with you all day long in your house and just practice the different contact points. If you are a teacher, your students are very fortunate to have you.

1:00 How did you play finger strokes without using your thumb on your right hand!? 😦 So cool
@chrisljung5137 Жыл бұрын
Haha I never noticed that I did this, it’s the first time I’ve gotten this pointed out. I guess it just grew along with my playing. But I use my fingers and ”squeeze” them into my palm , this way I get the speed along with control . Hope this helps a bit atleast , thanks for watching man 😁

Many years ago as a boy, I started with traditional grip. As a young adult, I had a teacher who convinced me that there's no logical reason to have a different grip on each hand and I agreed with that. Fast forward about 40 years later I'm learning traditional again. There IS a reason for a different grip on each hand... Each hand is different! My left hand can do things better in traditional than matched. Not everything yet, but it's getting there. The way the kit is layed out, it's much easier for the left hand to get around more efficiently. Also, the left hand muscles have had a lifetime of different training. Bottom line... the left hand is different and for some of us prefers a different grip.

A bit late, but will this help for marching snare too? Or is it more jazz style only? Thanks

I'm a 69 year old drummer with what I've always felt were "hands of stone" No Roberto Duran comparison intended ! I was taught this grip but could never master it. Thanks for breaking this down and making it learnable for me !

Awesome drumming friend! do you have any tips for finger control?
@chrisljung5137 Жыл бұрын
Thanks man I appreciate the comment! Just try and focus not using your arms as much, and let your hands guide the hand and stick. And then let the fingers do the rough work! Focus on letting the stick bounce and then catch it sort of.. I’ll see if I can make a tutorial on it it’s hard to explain in words 😅
