I don't remember people making a big deal with Robin Williams did Ms. Doubtfire, the Wayan brothers in White Chicks, or Barry Humphries doing Dame Edna (although he did say some bad stuff). It's a form of entertainment for the majority of people who do it. The ONLY reason Conservatives hate drag now/more is the anti-gay, anti-trans agenda.

I'm probably wrong but I think it's because traditionally drag performers weren't paid. They would perform in random bars or venues where patrons would either not need to pay at all to enter or their entrance fee went solely to the venue owner. So to show specific performers support a tipping culture began. The best answer to this is probably much more complicated, like asking how did tipping servers in restaurants become a social norm.

Drag is art. Drag is expression. MANY theater people are drag artists. Mostly made up of kweer people and it’s mostly kweer people who are in the arts (music, singing, dance, performance, acting, costuming, designing, etc). People tip drag queens because they appreciate and enjoy the entertainment. Bars rely on patrons to spend money and time at their locations. Drag queens build a reputation with the community and people will go to these establishments because of the drag performers at these locations, which means more money/business for the owners. Now that drag has hit the mainstream (though it has been around 1870’s that comes from the term GRAND RAG used typically for masquerade balls) the money and engagement these drag artists bring in has grown exponentially. Unless art is abolished, drag is is never going away, ever!

a drag queen is someone who is typically a man dressing as the exaggerated and stereotypical idea of a woman for fun. not all drag queens are men however. a drag show is a bunch of drag queens or kings coming together to perform to music in drag. its a very queer scene and wonderful. hope that helps
