I remember watching your videos a few years ago. The one where you edited the Orion Molecular Cloud is still the one I get back to. I believe I also learned about "ETTR" from you. All the best :)

Great tutorial even 5.5 years later! Quick question - do you do a little basic processing to each image before exporting and stacking? It looks like you may do since no vignetting and the wb looks pretty neutral already - but just wanted to check! Thanks!

I first found this video a few years ago. You guys have done an amazing job in putting together everything from your experience. I am just wondering if you have an updated version of this by any chance? Over the last 9 years, a lot have changed from the gear specs to the Lightroom post processing capabilities. Please do consider making a new one or update if you don't have already.

Great video. I did not know about Siril software. I understand that Siril uses non-linear alignment of frames. I just bought my first mono camera with filters. I used so far only Photoshop for processing of my mono images. When I do Auto Align of Layers, stars from frames with different filters never align well in corners. I guess that this is because Photoshop is using only linear alignment algorithm.

I don’t think my old telescope is that nice & I didn’t have any adapters. What is a good SLR lens equivalent to use on a Nikon DX crop D300s. I have a 75-300 on a 2x converter for now

You could photograph the Sun and the Earth. Maybe Venus, Saturn and Jupiter. All are part of the Milky Way and all can be seen during the day, depending on the conditions.

Do you mean like an RX100 or RX10? Neither have the ability to remove the lens so that makes it less optimal for hooking to a telescope. Great cameras though!

Fantastic information. Something I found with Luna photography is, the earth seems static and the sky rotates over head. Yes, I know that challenges the heliocentric model but....? Also there is displacement occurring....something like water? What do you see?
@LonelySpeck
@LonelySpeck 2 ай бұрын
yes, the sky appear to rotate because the Earth rotates. You're standing on the rotating Earth so from your reference point, everything else appears to spin.

A full frame will give more information taking into account the quality of modern lenses and converters, plus, most importantly, you will get color thanks to raw video, and not a trivial gray Moon. The camera with a 61 MP sensor is familiar to you. The video itself is interesting and quite reasonable for a budget hobby. Thank you!
@UriRa
@UriRa 3 ай бұрын
Try a telephoto lens with these cameras and the Moon will reveal the color of its surface to you thanks to cdng 12 bit... I recommend!

I wonder how this compares with the f/1.8 GM lens. I'm interested because I have a Nikon 105 mm f/1.4, which I chose over the Sigma equivalent mainly based on the Nikon version having greater transmission at f/1.4 (or any other aperture for that matter) - amounting to about two-thirds of a stop. So, the Sigma let through similar amount of light to a hypothetical f/1.8 Nikon. If the GM transmits two-thirds of a stop more light than the Sigma, both should have similar exposure despite the aperture difference. But I want one of the two.

Another way of extending your focal length while keeping the size under control is a catadioptric telescope. For a budget of near $300 you can have a 1300 mm focal length Maksutov-Cassegrain which is probably even more compact than the refractor used by the author. Catadioptrics are usually quite dim, but they still excel at such bright targets like planets.

Great video. I am also seriously considering this new lens, but I already have the Sigma 14 F1.4 DG DN and Sony 14GM, so still debating, what's your opinion regarding the image quality between this and the 14 F1.4 DG DN besides the Fisheye vs Rectilinear.
@LonelySpeck
@LonelySpeck 4 ай бұрын
Because of the lack of rectilinear distortion, the fisheye has a sharper image overall. It doesn't stretch the extreme corners like a "normal" rectilinear lens does.

@@LonelySpeck Thanks again for you feedback Ian, very helpful, please keep on doing this kind of real life review, that makes your channel stand out of other " reviewer" who mostly just do test charts. Got another question not related to this lens if you don't mind, I am shooting with a pair of Astro Modified Sony, and wondering how you handle the White balance in the field, do you prefer to set a fixed number ( in Kelvin) or you leave it in auto, I normally set it at 3000 Kelvin this way all my shots are consistent, but then I still have to do quite a bit of work in post, just wondering if you have any suggestion or any video specifically on " How to set you WB when shooting Milky Way with Astro modified camera".
@LonelySpeck
@LonelySpeck 4 ай бұрын
@@dannyli9424 on my astro modified body I set a custom WB with a grey card in daylight. Raws usually look quite orange out of camera. Really, any non-auto setting for WB is fine as long as you're shooting raw.

Great shots Ian! Is the fpL worth the extra cost, or can you get decent astro photos with just the fp? Any technical advantages of the fp over the fpL?
@LonelySpeck
@LonelySpeck 4 ай бұрын
The biggest advantage of course is the resolution. 60MP of the fpL made a huge difference over the 24MP of the fp when it came to shooting Andromeda. If you were to use one for cinematography or rely on AF for your work outside of astro, the fpL also has better phase detection autofocus. The extra resolution also makes it possible to use the crop function to dramatically zoom digitally while keeping 4k resolution output.

The angle of the sun is less steep at the top of that photo. Essentially, "top" of the moon in that pic is at high noon of the lunar day so everything is evenly illuminated which makes everything appear much lower contrast and thus lower in detail. The best contrast is always at the transition between the illuminated part and the shadowed part of the moon (the terminator line, or twilight zone) so that's where you always see the most detail in moon shots.

Very good video, thank you. (read more please) On the other hand, since the 80's with my brother on summer nights (Santiago, Chile) we would lie down looking at the sky and constantly see "stars" that were disguised and camouflaged in front of real stars with the same brightness and color. Very similar to what is seen in this video at approximately 2:30 to 2:33, in the first third vertical to the center, they move short distances. The most striking thing is that more than once we manage to see 3 or 5 "stars" that "run" synchronously. Over the years of researching, I realized that they are not meteorites, they are not satellites and I have never read anyone who discusses that topic. Very mysterious.
