Pearson shouldered Wright caused him to fall forward. Wright stuck his left foot back and the ball banked off his foot into Pearson’s right armpit. Notice Pearson reaching for the ball with his left hand, and ending up catching it one handed with his right armpit. I never understood that for 45 years and saw it from the end zone view. Warrants mentioning.

Interesting how the commentators either didn’t see any controversy there or they were completely ignoring it. Something that apparently wasn’t too uncommon. Like when they ignored the controversial turnover in Super Bowl 5. Yes Dallas fumbled, but they also recovered it.

This is the play that started the phrase “Hail Mary.” It was also the first long in the air desperation throw for a touchdown with little time left to take the lead. The “Immaculate Reception” was three years earlier, but was thrown downfield inside the 40 yard line. These plays are legendary because they are setting the template for fantastic finishes to come.

It’s hard to believe how much offenses have changed (due to the rules change as well). This took place with 32 seconds left I’m guessing the play finished with 20 or something, which today would be possible to drive into field goal range to tie it.

Always wondered who ended up with the ball, which would have probably been a display piece in Canton. Pearson was part of two such plays - this one and Dorsett’s 99-yard run (in the Vikings’ new arena), 7 years later. In both cases, a history-making ball was thrown away.

He did push Nate Wright. The tv cameras didn't catch it, but NFL Films did. The ref got nailed in the head with a liquor bottle. This was the original "bottlegate"

This is the best thing that could have happened to the Vikings. Allows you unlimited whining rights about getting robbed and it also saves you from another Super Bowl loss to the Steelers.

If you watch the the play the defender is on Drew Pearson and then suddenly he is on his arse looking up at Pearson. The dopey announcer--who was he???--said the defender over ran the play. Say what? How do you over run a play will being flat on your arse???

Watched this as a teen with my folks, all Cowboys fans. Mom kept screaming, "DID HE CATCH IT? DID HE CATCH IT?" So many epic Staubach comebacks during his short career. Legends on both sides of the ball. Back when the NFL played football.

I too was 11 in ‘75 watching this game with my dad. Dad was a huge Vikings fan, and had $ on the game. We had this behemoth of a rocking recliner that he almost flipped over backwards when Pearson made this catch. 😂

After years and years of hearing and reading how Pearson got away with a blatant push off, I finally now actually watched the play and...IDK. From these angles it doesn't look like much at all and more like Wright ended up totally out of position on the underthrown ball. What I don't understand is wtf Krause was doing. It seemed like he was off in nowhere to begin with, then really late getting over to the play, and even kind of going only 2/3rds speed instead of busting a gut to help on the play. And from his angle he must've had a perfect view of how badly Wright was out of position. For all of that one thing is not in doubt and that was pass rusher #77 (Page, I think) getting flat out tackled by a Dallas O lineman. That uncalled hold was so bad it's almost unsportsmanlike conduct lol

I was in the bleachers that the bottle was thrown from. I remember that play well. It was offensive pass interference on Preston Pearson. Unfortunately the bottle was thrown and hit the referee. Had that referee not been hit. I believe the Cowboys would have been penalized for offensive pass interference. And the Vikings would have had won. With another trip to the Super Bowl instead of the Cowboys.

Okay...HUGE Viking fan here and I was 16 when this happened. Watching it live and the replays over the years I was convinced, (like nearly all Viking fans) that Pearson pushed off. But I have to say, after watching it over and over the last few years, I don't think he did. If you get a good quality slo-mo replay, watch Pearson's right arm. It goes out of view as he reaches in front of his body for the ball. And then reappears as Drew reaches for the ball. I don't see any moment there where it could have made contact with Nate Wright. I think Wright just stumbled and went down on his own.
