It’s predictive programming. The Sorcerers who rule us tell us what they are going to do through Hollywood movies, music, and tv shows. The type of reality they want created. We collectively manifest reality so the version that they want is created, as a result!

You mentioned a couple of AHP episodes - Lamb to the Slaughter also inspired Hitch's 1971 film, Frenzy, plus it was remade as an episode of Tales of the Unexpected. Fans should also check out the episode, One More Mile To Go, which also influenced Psycho. As an offshoot, check out Powell's 1960 shocker, Peeping Tom, made around the same time and released a few months before Psycho. Highly recommended

The score by Michael Small is kind of, sort of, inspired by the improvisational pieces that Keith Jarrett released at around the same time. The most famous is, of course, his Köln Concert from 1975. But his earlier Bremen and Lausanne concerts were released already in 1973 and may very well have been heard by Mr Small. Thanks for a good breakdown of this minor masterpiece by Alan J. Pakula. I first saw this film at a drive-in. I class it vaguely with a low-budget psychedelic westetern called Zechariah. I saw the underground people as a sort of insular Christian evangelical group grimly and unsustainably hanging on to a familiar, if imaginary past. They are aggressively white, proud of their American-ness, and even proud of their ignorance. Are they much different from today’s MAGA crowd?

Just watched this for a a second time today and on 35mm no less! I really like the grittiness of the first half and feel like the second half of the doesn’t entertain as much and deviates from the original. I also would’ve liked the darker ending. Robert Ryan is great as usual! Huge fan of Wise’s The Set-Up (1949) also starring Ryan.

When you listen to Weird Al doing songs in the style of someone else, is that parody or pastiche?
@10secondfilmschool

That’s a fantastic question! I think what we need to consider is what the cover is doing for the original song…. Are we laughing at it, or curious for more…?
@Ned88Man
@Ned88Man 3 ай бұрын
@@10secondfilmschool So, for example, a song like "Craigslist" by Weird Al is definitely done in the style of the Doors. It has that Jim Morrison voice and keyboard that one would identify as being fully "Doors"...if someone asked me what this was, pastiche or parody, I don't know how I would answer that.
@10secondfilmschool
@10secondfilmschool 3 ай бұрын
@Ned88Man it’s parody I believe. It’s a single target of joke, and it’s not really “combining” disparate ideas together to create a new idea, but I do think Weird Al’s latest stuff is quite elevated for a typical parody.

2 great things to note, one directly about PSYCHO, the second indirectly: 1) Alfred Hitchcock once acknowledged that he understood as a new decade approached, the cinematic world was going to change with it. Which is why he made sure PYSCHO was his cinematic torch passer. He purposely had the film shot from September of 1959 to December of 1959 as a chronological reminder to cast and crew that this film was going to start 1960 on a high note. Also take note that this was also the end of a visual era for Hitchcock. It would be his last film to be strictly shot in black and white. 2) You can actually think his early, British films for being the master of suspense. One particular film, from 1936, actually taught Hitchcock a lesson on how long a director should hold an audience at attention. SABOTAGE, a great suspense film about a London resident bombing vital parts of British infrastructure, contains a controversial sequence involving a boy who gets tricked into delivering a bomb! Won't spoil the outcome... just know that Hitchcock always claimed in later years that he never liked the outcome of that sequence. The lenght of time in which he held the situation in suspense irked Hitch to the point that one could argue his American films benefited from his trial and error approach back in the 30's. ❤
