I grew up loving early 80s music but was too young to have heard this one. It’s basically perfect. You guys made a minimalist masterpiece

I'd be really curious to know the back story to many of the 'Berserker' lyrics and tracks. Love you man. Been a Numan fan since I was 7 years old in 1980.

First heard this song in 1985, I was 15 years old listening to college radio out of Davidson College WDAV which played classical music all day but had the Flipsides radio show from midnight til 2am, I would record as much music as I could from that 2 hour show, didn't hear this song again for many years, there were a few songs I had recorded that I never found out what they were, lost in time

Devenir gris devenir gris One man on a lonely platform One case sitting by his side Two eyes staring cold and silent Shows fear as he turns to hide Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) (Un homme dans une gare isolée) (Une valise à ses côtés) (Des yeux fixes et froids) (Montrent de la peur lorsqu'il) (Se tourne pour se cacher) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) (Sens la pluie comme un été Anglais) (Entends les notes d'une chanson lointaine) (Sortant de derrière d'un poster) (Espérant que la vie ne fut aussi longue) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) Feel the rain like an English summer Hear the notes from a distant song Stepping out from a back shop poster Wishing life wouldn't be so long (Devenir gris) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) (Devenir gris) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) (Devenir gris) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) (Devenir gris) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey) Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)

As one of my top 5 fav all time/any genre songs (you're keeping company w/Tchaikovsky which I hope is a compliment 😉) this song has always found a way on every mixtape (& now playlist) I've ever put together Im so appreciative of learning about its origins - congrats on creating a classic 😊

My god that piano piece is euphoric. I saw Midge perform 'Fade to Grey' at Forever Young Fest last year and that song still blows me away. It just goes to show that a certain coupling of chords can reverberate forever and in various forms.

Dear Christopher, I have ALWAYS adored "Fade to grey". I put it up there with "Good Vibrations", "I am the Walrus", "Light my Fire" and any classic where the piece is lifted with an amazig piano structure. "Fade to grey" and "I am the Walrus" have some similar lyrics. Music has power. And, what you created is immortal. Thank you for giftig us magic. RIP Steve Strange. David

I love how the break was actually completely unplanned and yet you’d never know by listening to the song. This also explains why this song works equally well just as an instrumental, because it was originally written that way!

The piano piece sounds so much like Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out). Although they said they were inspired by REM but maybe subconsciously Thom Yorke was inspired by Fade to Grey, both songs also have FADE in the their titles which is interesting

Thanks Chris, it was a real joy to watch you reminisce where this song started from and when you played the chords and then the "bass synth" section, it's simply immaculate, I found myself starting to sing the lyrics beacause it's like hearing the completed song. Also, having watched your interview with Electronic Cafe, I was utterly flabbergasted when you mentioned your school music teacher being Aedan Kerney - I went to Boundstone school myself and my mum, (who still lives in Lancing) still sees him occasionally. On a final note, (pun intended), there are many recreations of Fade to Grey on KZfaq, but most don't get the bass riff quite right - they only need to come here now, to know how it's done!

Dear Mr. Christopher Payne, thank you for taking the time to explain your biggest hit to the world. You have probably composed many songs or sounds in your life, but only this sound combination has - according to people - a "timeless claim to eternity" That's why it was important to explain it so well and precisely. Maybe evergreen and timeless pieces of music are a puzzle made up of many small pieces (melody, singer, lyrics) then you have certainly created the main piece. ...I hope I don't cause you any displeasure. That really wouldn't be my intention: of course I don't know the exact relationships of the individual band members. Or the legal agreements. But I find it very sad that Brigitte Arens' French voice was hardly mentioned. We also can't find any picture from this time of the woman with the great, sweet French accent. That's too bad. She also contributed to global success. I hope she alive.
