渐渐之石 is pronounced as chanchanzhishi, not jianjianzhishi.

could you share your reference? 毛诗正义? do not take it seriuosly, the pronouciation changes always, only very few in Shijing is sticked to those old pronuciations, but this one definetly does not belong to those few. Still, those few old pronouciations is still not exactly the old sounds. If you read Chinese, you can chekc my article on this one: www.choubb.com/?p=6428

@@MandarinFan The reason why so many people read it as chanchanzhishi is because it borrows from the term: 巉巉, which means cliff and it makes more literal sense.

I just listened to your commentary again, and I find it very helpful. Could you send me a printed version of it? I would like to study it more carefully, especially as you unravel the last four verses (the fifth stanza) in contrast to the mood of the first four stanzas (or paragraphs).

Thanks for the line-by-line commentary: especially interesting is the third-from-last line (along with Sima Qian's later addition). Can you help me find an English translation of the entire poem?

I have no idea of that in English world, you could try on google etc..

Glad you enjoy it. Poem cold never be explained(诗无达诂), this is the conclusion made 2000 years ago. I agree with it, yet we could still try out best to explore some facts of a poem.

It's not the horses of the Hans, it's the horses of the nomads.
@MandarinFan3 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil. not sure what your are refering or meaning, horses of Hans/nomad? after a self-check, in 17:50 Hun's horse(胡骑), yes, Hun is nomad. 汉 is Han, 胡 is Hun. Sorry for my unclear pronunciation, thanks for your advice.

This comment is for Mr/Mrs @Kon Ken. I got a notice of new comment from Kon Ken but there is nothing here, youtube is weird, sometimes evil LOL. Thanks Kon Ken for pointing out that "臭" could be read as xiu4, I do beleive this is one possible read out, thus the meaning varies a little bit as smell/flavor, it not does nessesarily sweet or stinking, it means to smell or the smell. The two type of explanation co-exists for quite a while, it is up to the readers chioce of pronuciation and meaning. either way, it does not changes the whole poem's meaning and situation at all. Keep in mind, the pronuciation and meaning in classic literature(训诂) is a huge topic, thare are always arguements on sounds sometime the meaning of a character. When we dig into Chinese classic literature, the most popular sound and meaning definetly won't satisfy everyone, for me it is of great pleasure to dig into it. While in my video, that would be lousy and tiresome.

笙是乐器,一般概念上没有香味的.这里大概是美女弹笙,美女香,由此笙也香了吧.一抹是数词+量词的结构, 抹是动词,这里作为量词, a stroke.
