I am SUPER hyped for these palettes. I think they are gonna look amazing 🥰 Here’s a little sneak peak of how the watercolor palettes will look once the underglaze fire is done Are you excited yet? 🤭 They will be available at @kristythepainter and @issy.watercolors webshop later this year! Note: these will NOT be available in my webshop. European shoppers will have to get them at ISSY webshop

Do you have to take them to be fired? I thought air dry clay was air dried?
@CaitlinBongers2 ай бұрын
These are not made with air dry clay! Ceramics are very brittle when dried by air and have to be fired in a kiln to get strength

I’m not sure what you talking about! Do you mean the glaze before it’s being fired for the second time? There’s a link in the description of you want to know the exact one I used!
@sherryscoloringandpaintingcorn4 ай бұрын
how do you know which glaze is right for the temp it was fired in?
@CaitlinBongers4 ай бұрын
The glaze should say the firing temperature on the container! There’s usually earthenware glazes, midware glazes and stoneware available in most pottery stores. Sometimes it says ‘fires to cone 5-6’ instead of a temperature. You can just look up what temperatures the cones stand for
@user-hb4xf9hw9v5 ай бұрын
Did you use porcelain? What was the kiln temp. for 1st glaze fire? How long on hold (or soak)? Thank you for sharing. Sandra, Enland
@CaitlinBongers5 ай бұрын
Hi it’s not porcelain! It’s stoneware clay that can be fully cured between 950-1250C. My bisque and glaze fire both were 1050C in this case. I’m not sure what you mean with hold or soak!

Place your clay slab on top of 4-5 pages of newspaper. Then you can use your needle tools. Also, the paper will absorb the excess water. You are doing great!
@CaitlinBongers9 ай бұрын
It’s been a while since I made this video and I’ve changed my workflow quite a bit since then! Lately I’ve been using a linen cloth underneath my slabs which also works like a charm 🥰 I’ve been thinking to make an updated version of this video some day soon 🤔
@ritamontalvo61959 ай бұрын
For making your loops, just place the bead or pendant on the wire, hold tight, bend wire to the side, cut excess wire. Usind round nose pliers make your loop. That's all. Your work looks great! I like it!

Iron planted in that ceramic jewelry??? What material is it????
@CaitlinBongers9 ай бұрын
It’s a special thread that is able to withstand the heat of a kiln! I believe it’s made of Nichrome (gets a little bit more brittle after firing)

I love this. I'm trying to make my own earrings too. Did I hear you say you can put "underglaze on top of the glaze"? I was hoping you'd show the finished product with that underglaze over glaze. How did it turn out? Thanks.
@CaitlinBongers9 ай бұрын
You can put the underglaze on top! It will melt into the glaze underneath and usually is a bit more Matt than the glaze you’re using. But I’ve also had a couple of times where it became a little rough. I would definitely make some tests with your glazes before you try it on your real pieces!

@CaitlinBongers10 ай бұрын
Thank you!! I don’t really have a good way of tracking the sketchbooks. I think I have filled somewhere between 30-40, with some being really small (20 pages) and some HUGE (190+ pages) I might also have filled some in my teenage years but sadly I threw those away :( I should count them all and make some sort of index so I can keep track 🤔

I know its been a while since this was posted but... Would that work with air dry clay? If i paint and add waterproof varnish would it be ruined by the water in the paint?🥹
@CaitlinBongers10 ай бұрын
Hi! Unfortunately the mixing surface wouldn’t have the same qualities that ceramic has. It would essentially be like mixing on a plastic plate (so if you use acrylics it will stick to it and if you use watercolors it will bead and stain over time) There are some special clay varnishes that will do the job in making it waterproof and those palettes will be just as usable as a plastic palette! So if you just want to make a fun palette for yourself it’s definitely worth looking into :) I know a friend who made a palette with the sculpdit/sculpd brand varnish and used it for at least a little while! Since I don’t have experience with using air dry clay myself I can’t give you any more tips. But I don’t think it could hurt to try it out 🥰 the worst that could happen is that it’s a learning experience!

Thank you! I’m glad you liked it ❤️ I used to have a lot of trouble when I felt like I had to improve with every drawing. But now I try to remind myself it’s also okay to just have fun, even if I didn’t get better. Or even if I didn’t have fun AND didn’t get better, it’s still a step in the process. It may be frustrating sometimes but with each drawing we’ll get to see more of who we can be as artists ❤️

Oh my, this podcast is everything I ever felt/experienced/thought/wondered/frustrated/angered/loved/... about all the topics you discussed! It was like you looked into my creative heart and soul and spoke about all what's in there, so unreal. I am happy to have found this podcast, can't wait for the other ones. I wish we could sit around the kitchen table together, I would tell you all my experience I had at art school too (also St. Joost btw, but in Breda, (yup, i'm a dutchie/'brababnder' too) that was a terrible elitist establishment, yuk,...talking about red dots on a black background made just 5 minutes before class classmates, that's almost exactly what happened in my class too!!...and I've quit after 8 months, after that I never touched a paintbrush for 10 years!) This was just an example, but won't go further into all the topic I could talk along with you, because this comment would be a novel long! And I truly NEVER post comments underneath yt, especially not when it was recorded a half year ago,... but I just wanted to let you know, you are really not alone in these experiences & thoughts. And thank you so so much for sharing these and starting this podcast!! - Heel veel creatieve groetjes!

We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed the podcast! Sadly it's an experience I see a lot of artists have with art schools... I'm actually going back to art school this year to give it another try, but not back to St Joost :'D. I hope this time will be a better experience and I hope there's better art education in the Netherlands than what St Joost had to offer. It just sucks the life out of creating, and makes you feel like you can't just create for fun anymore. I'm happy you found your way back into creating! I hope you're having fun and exploring the creative path you can make for yourself :) I don't know if you are still around Breda somewhere but I actually host a Sketch group that meets up in Tilburg every few weeks or so! If you are interested go check out my instagram, there's a link to the discord there
