I always wondered why Subaru hasn’t put out a real body on frame mid size pickup truck, these days it would probably do very well in this market.

Is the Subaru Forrester the better made car because it’s made in Japan over the outback made an America? Put another way should I be reluctant to buy the outback over the Forrester?

I use the Wix 57055 on my FB20 Crosstrek. Best readily available and cost effective filter IMO. Good construction, filtering, and 27psi relief valve. I use Castrol 0w20 full synthetic @ $30/5qts changed at around 6k. All good. KISS(keep it simple stupid)😁

My 2016 Outback 2.5 limited has a problem with cold starts. After a moment, the dash lights up like a Chrismas tree, and it's not just lights, the actual cruise control and rough surface warning are real and in effect, everything is on and a real warning. The car is even limited by those features. The only way to fix it is to disconnect the battery for a moment. happens about once a week. any ideas anyone? Otherwise the car has 150k and is a great car.

Great deal if those are the only issues and you can fix it yourself. Ok deal if you need to have it diagnosed and fixed by a mechanic. But like any used car it's a risk. There could be major issues in the near future.

I'm looking at one of these to work around my 5 acre property and short runs to the dump or lumber yard. Was looking at a side by side but can't take them on the road and the boxes are too small to be useful. Plus they cost as much or more. There are also a lot of logging roads around my area were I can go on adventures into the bush. I wouldn't worry about scratching it.

I’m in the South Jersey area near Philadelphia. I wish I could find somebody competent like this guy to do a transmission service on my 15 outback. I don’t trust the dealership and there are too many bad mechanics around my area.

The owner before you got totally hosed and was probably relieved to get even a partial return on the money he spent on repairs while offloading a car that was likely a total nightmare for him when he put it on the market. For you, it appears to be a smokin' good deal. Not so much from the standpoint of cost of parts and labor (your time) you need to make things right. But you have the ability to do the things necessary to fix it up as an everyday driver or something to sell on at a reasonable profit. What makes it a great deal for you is the chance to make several videos on this car on a KZfaq channel that has 378K subscribers. I, for one, can't wait for the next installment.

I think you did well, since you have the wherewithal to perform all of the necessary repairs. You mentioned $800 for a valve body… are these sold as remanufactured? Or are they new…

All Subaru are reliable with the proper maintenance except early models (head gasket, fixed). We used to own three. Last year we bought new Impreza RS 2024 model (wife drives it, she likes Subies). At 14k miles have got multiple messages on display (check engine, eye system...), went to dealer, checked, said engine carbon buildup. They cleaned all that gunk under warranty. Wife drives 70% highways/ 30% city, never had this problem with previous cars. I did research and found that Subaru switched from port injection to direct injection engines during 2019-2020, now all models have Di, except BRZ( Toyota GR86 joint project, D-4S dual injection). Be prepared for this, if you will get this problem under warranty-no charge, no warranty or preventative maintenance it's around $350. But it is too soon at 14k miles!

Subaru's partnership with Toyota isntheir saving grace. Toyota has perfected the hybrid platform and now Subaru can take advantage the decades of research on this technology. Unfortunatelly, Toyota is losing its way by putting small displacement turbo-charged engines in their latest designs. This has lead to many recalls and engine failures. Toyota must get back to its conservative roots and get away from their terrible mistake.

The Subaru Crosstrek hybrid seems like a rare find. I am hard-pressed to find any hybrid Subaru. A ten year old Subaru with nearly 200,000 miles, I would avoid especially with all of the leaks. That Subaru had a lousy mechanic and you need to repair all the damage. It is a good thing you are a mechanic and can recognize all of the problems, but you will need to put an extra grand or two to fix it. So you paid $2,900 for a project car with minimal rust: I guess that OK for a Mechanic, but for the regular consumer maybe not.

Air filter IMO seem better to do at most 6 months even if that's only a couple thousand miles I find they clog with leaves in fall and stringy pollen dust in spring. Also inspect every month for mice especially in winter - I had some mice ate a hole thru my engine air filter once and tried to build a nest on the cabin air filter repeatedly.

"blows mind a dealer wouldn't accept money" - I wanted a block heater so I could have useful defrost without having to idle in winter so long but the dealers ranged from saying it didn't exist to claiming its "not required" and being unwilling to install one. The other thing that made me mad at the dealership here...at 60K they couldn't tell me what the estimated maintenance costs would be until after the work was done...and then had sticker shock when checking some fluids and oil change was over $1,000!

I've been wondering about my WRX transmission oil replacement and surprised there's no real intervals...was thinking 4yr approaching 20K might see if they are willing to replace it even though its not "due".

Is it hard to put the drain tube back in? Does it attach to something beyond the firewall into the framework and out the car? I was just about to proceed, and as I was about to pull out the drain hose and felt the resistance, I stopped and wondered if it connects to something or just hangs out of the car?! I want to be able to put it back together! I’m doing this without jacks…just draining inside the car as MrS did in the video.

I just replaced the cv axles on my 2016 Forester XT. Clicking sound when i turned left was the reason. I thought, might as well do both. I followed the video to the letter, but now my car has a mean shutter. I immediately stopped driving it. The only thing i did different was the axles were from NAPA. Is this the cause of the vibration? Big fan of your channel.

I don't like the oil leak problems, but the rest of the car seems pretty good.

I know this is old but hopefully you still get comment notifications from it. What causes the timing chain tensioners to not get oil pressure to cause the rattle? by 2016 outback sounds just like that and usually with an oil change it gets a lot better. do oil deposits just get stuck in the tensioners? I want to do that but i'm worried about the cost since it seems engine removal is the easiest way to do it and at that point i'm sure there are a lot of other maintenance items to do "while you're in there"

Wow Mr Subaru!!!! I cannot believe they left the Oil in the cooling System and a crappy reseal job . Now u have to get a Radiator Cap and a complete clean and a reseal . The AC had a TSB because of the pulley . TSB was to replace the compressor . Subaru for me coughed up a few bucks even out of Warranty. I evacuated and put in a new compressor and all new O rings and been running ok . I love Crosstreks !!! You have fun with this one !!!
