The organ survived the fire completely intact, It wasn't even water damaged, Thank god, This organ's thunderous pedal will rip through the church once more after the cathedral is rebuilt

After listening versions performed by plenty of organists even Widor himself or Cauchereau, it's so obvious Latry really owns it the best.

Awesome recording. But Notre Dame is so bloody crammed with clueless tourists. About as ridiculous as Westminster Abbey or Canterbury Cathedral. Saint Sulpice or Saint Eustache are far preferable, and if you're in the UK, visit Hereford Cathedral or Beverley Minster if you wish to have a moment away -and some silence- from the throngs.

@Tritimium I think you're got it... My guess is this: LH voix celestes, RH flutes 8 principal 8, RF sesq (or clarinet?), LF soft 16' w celestes coupled......all a wild guess.. nevertheless, a very striking improv from Olivier :)

Notre Dame Sunday High Mass - the organ has a terrific sound for anyone with any feeling, a knee and tear jerker. This Widor the correct speed, not like the awful jet speed of Diane Bish.

ThePipeorganman's comment is ridiculous. I"ve been in Notre Dame and have heard this incredible organ, and it sounds wonderful. Why do people like to fashion themselves as snobs to sound intelligent?

I am sorry to say this after working on over 20 pipe organs in my life Cavaillé-Coll made there instruments so they would never half to be restored if they just left it alone it would of never had to have been worked on. Look and St.Sulpice it still has its original console and it will always have it. There's a quote "if its not broke don't fix it. Unfortunately they have completely destroyed the original sound of this wonderful pipe organ today it sounds like crap.
@rrkdudas6848
@rrkdudas6848 6 жыл бұрын
but it was broken, they had to restore it. also the organ is entirely the same, all the original pipes are there, they just added a few stops and Chamades and replaced the console. if you want you can just play the organ there choosing just the original stops and it will sound the same

Would the poor sound quality be the main contributor to the less lively sounding reeds. Listening to recent Latry recordings and older Cochereau recordings I couldn't say that the organ in its current state isn't as good as it used to be.

@organmaster2101 I believe it was a Clicquot. Also, the Positif Clarinet and Euphone were replaced by a Baryton 8' and a Bassoon 16' respectively, a Principal 8' on the Recit, a Septieme 2-2/7 and a Chamade on the Solo, and Principals 16' and 8' have been added to the Pedal. That said, it's tambor is effectively unchanged, and many of those changes were carried out by Mutin, Cavaille-Coll's direct successor, and therefore as kosher as if Aristide had performed the changes himself.

The same "problem" happened to me when I played at St. Paul's in San Diego (Aeolian Skinner organ from 1953). During the practice session, we had about 3 seconds of reverb. During the concert however, we had almost none!

I have the greatest respect for Leguay. Of all the Titulaire's he understands the limitations of the rebuild/restoration the best - he plays within certain parameters, doesn't cloud the ensemble too much, when he goes for tutti he generally only uses the castrated Boisseau chamades for defining the treble, ignoring the revolting, fat, flabby, fart-like chamade additions from 1990. It almost, (and I emphasise almost) sounds like the Cochereau era organ, but only partly so, I'm afraid to say.

I think when people play this piece too fast, it's generally because the space they're in doesn't have the reverb to carry it at a slightly slower tempo. Try playing it on a German Baroque type instrument relatively dead hall and you'll see what I mean.
