A valid point, Eltham has certainly lost a lot of its charm. However, balancing the negative side of progress, Eltham has also lost rickets, dysentery, polio, tuberculosis and other poverty driven ailments. Yes, as sad as losing so much is, I retain a glass half full outlook.

It seems that the subtitles might be auto-generated, as there are several mistakes in these captions, e.g Hengersbury (Hengistbury) Head, Mr. Rose (Rolls), right (Wright), and the complete lack of capital letters, all of which make this film seem rather amateurish. Furthermore the recent aerial view of the crash site and the modern street map are not at the same scale. Considering historical details, no mention is made of the alteration Rolls made to the tailplane of his aircraft the evening before his fatal crash and which may well have been the cause of the accident. More research is needed to raise the historical profile of this 'documentary'.

So many memories of the area in the fifties. Just thought all old properties and shops were normal then. Remember the war time beach debris that was from Poole to Southampton Water. Oftentimes going to the Arne peninsula and Shell bay area was tricky as so many explosives remained. Many footpaths to the beach and dunes were strictly fenced to prevent us kids straying. Lovely pictures and thanks for posting.

Good memories from a little more than 50 years ago, l lived in Barton and the George was my 'local' l remember Reg who was ex army, maybe CSM or something, ran a good house kept all in check. There was a music shop ran by a young man, l think it was in the Pantiles shops but l have no idea which one, he used to send sheet music all over the world from that little shop, l think his name was 'Aiden'.

Some very good photos, but they were ruined because you do not allow enough time for people to take in the contents. Also, the titles of each view blocked what little chance there is of seeing the pictures. Very disappointing for me since I lived in Darlington as a boy and then moved away.

Heartbreaking. The Pompey of my youth (60s) gone. My grandparents lived down St. Davids Rd. My brothers and I would go to Canoe Lake, go along the esplande to the little kiosks there down to the respective piers. Later I would drink with my great uncle & grandfather at the club on S. Parade pier (The Dolphin?). I haven't been back since '73 when my nan died. It really has changed and I don't think for the better, especially Comercial Rd where she ran her shop called Shop N Save. I spent many hours in there after closing, stacking shelves for her & grandad.

Ancestors that lived in Darlington from at least 1823, when my 3rd great grandfather was married at St Cuthbert's Church. Great grandfather John was in the Ancient Order of Druids around 1900. I worked as a draughtsman for Whessoe Heavy Engineering back in the 1980s. Our family worked for the North Eastern Railway Company, living in Darlington, Stockton & Thornaby ( where I was born & grew up ).

One question no-one knows the answer to is why has a defensive building got such large windows and entrances. You can see from the photos the arch of the stonework so the size cannot be explained that they were widened by locals removing stones.
