Was waiting for the actual tutorial for the whole 15 minutes that you spent talking. Definitely not knitting instructions more like a discussion on picking up stitches. 😂

Great video on Shibui Twig! Purchased several skeins after hearing Twig was being discontinued and so disappointed about that. Questions: 1) Did you swatch with 20 stitches 2) how did you wash Twig swatch and 3) can this yarn be machine washed and dried - I have only hand washed and laid flat to dry. Used Twig to knit Yume in 2022 - got 24 st with 3.75 mm needle.

This video helped so much. I want to work on a cardigan called Folklore Cardigan where there are two versions of a certain singer's cardigan. I like lace weight and the pattern is in DK (the paid version). I think I may have to redo the pattern but I love smaller stitches and the look of machine knitted. I appreciate this a lot!

The sweater I'm knitting called for a gauge swatch over a cable panel. It wasn't easy counting the stitches.
@WatchBarbaraKnit9 күн бұрын
No, that is a pain. When you have that it is often easier to measure the motif and then do some math based on knowing the number of stitches in the motif.
@plehrer123415 күн бұрын
If I am knitting flat and I’m to begin knitting in the round to join the neck how do I do that? I’m confused.
@WatchBarbaraKnit13 күн бұрын
It's something that is easier to demonstrate than explain. Hold your work so that the wrong side is facing you and the yarn is coming off the needle in your right hand. Then move your needles so that the cable forms a circle and the points are pointing at each other in the right position to start knitting. Redistribute thr stitches so they fill the cable and tips and start knitting.

I agree on long-tail cast on. Other than quickness, I do not see the attraction and estimating yarn is a pain. I too, use the cable cast on which is easy and a good versatile cast on.

I would understand the obsession of the long tail cast on if it was easy to teach, but it really isn't. I just don't get it.

Since I learned to properly swatch, I am so much more confident in my knitting it’s amazing! I don’t think most knitters know that when a pattern states knit to X number of inches/centimeters it means knit to a blocked length! (I just found this out a few years ago.). So now that I know how many rows per inch I have on my blocked swatch, I can calculate how many rows I need to do to get the correct length for my garment. Thanks!
@WatchBarbaraKnit20 күн бұрын
That is definitely one of the hidden knowledge knitting issues. It's not as simple as pulling out your measuring tape ... so much math in knitting

I started doing swatches because all my sweaters are expanding ad infinitum and I am so fedup ! But then I thought this is not so much the fiber that is expanding but rather the textile I am producing. Is it correct ? Also I started spinning because I want to understand ! Thank you Barbara, love your videos !
@WatchBarbaraKnit21 күн бұрын
It could be a bit of both but yes, a looser gauge is going to "expand" more than a tight gauge. Thanks for watching!
@karenalbery277321 күн бұрын
Genius. I thought I knew all this stuff but every time I hear it I learn something! Also one of the things I found revolutionary was to make your swatch with running scrap yarn markers at the number of stitches that you are supposed to have for gauge and then measure the space between them to see if it's 4 inches or whatever it's supposed to be or not. I find I can be way more accurate than holding my ruler to my swatch and counting the stitches
@WatchBarbaraKnit21 күн бұрын
That is an especially good approach if you are swatching in pattern for something like lace. Lace gauge can be very difficult to count. As I said, there is soooo much more to talk about with gauge LOL!

I use a M1 if I neglected to make a yo in the previous row. I know the hole made is smaller than a yo makes, but I have never noticed the size difference in the work. Making the M1 is so much better than undoing a row to add the yo especially when making a lace pattern. I have even used M1 instead of yo consistently in a pattern, sometimes it’s easier to remember the M1 for me.
