From a technical standpoint, showing the drilling technology of the day, and the sequence of events in a blowout….absolutely incredible!

Daniel is concerned for H.W., but his concern for the oil just outweighs it. He has a soul, but it's tainted by greed... and totally blackened by the end of the movie.

The only thing that could make this film better is if i didn't have to get suggestions for videos about what quentin Tarantino thinks about this movie.

This was the film that opened my eyes to cinema. I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I’ve seen this movie twice, and I’m astonished that the filmmakers were able to make a historical drama about an oil prospector digging up oil during the gold rush such an intense and thrilling experience. This set piece is an encapsulation of how this film hooked you from beginning to end, using both real and cinematic elements to create such a great film.

Daniel was always painted as a villain, greedy and heartless, which he is to an extent, but the fact that the first thing he did was to run to get HW and to bring him to safety, shows that he indeed did love the boy, in his own way

This scene was filmed in almost the exact same part of texas as the opening part of No Country for Old Men when he's tracking the dog

There is a problem at the end of the scene. If you look at the guys holding large protective sheet when they pushed the explosive in the fire. The explosion did nothing to the large sheet. Like if the exposition never happened and they added the explosion later with special effect.

I love films like this that not only transport you back in time to another era but also just give you a particular feeling that you don't get from other films, a feeling which can't really be explained. It makes you wish that the film wouldn't end. This is one of those films. Another that always comes to mind is Master and Commander.

they originally meant to do a take then put the fire out and do another take but they couldn't put the fire out and had to scramble to film this scene. the reverse on Daniel talking with done with film lights to mimic fire.

These cgi shots from 1:28-1:32 were the only shots to use computer-generated imagery in this entire scene everything else was practical.

7:01...this and forward, just fantastic. The music is just complete chaos much like what is happening on screen. Hard cuts when the explosion happens. Brilliant.

I know a guy who is actually a billionaire, on the Forbes list and all that. He's a lot like Plainview -- he only sees people as the objects he will use to make more money for himself. He has no real compassion. Plainview isn't really worried about his "son" in this scene -- he's only worried about losing a useful prop in his pursuit of wealth, which is what he adopted him for. Everything is a transaction or a game to be won, and losing is unacceptable. My "friend" is addicted to screaming at stockbrokers and financial advisors on the phone -- "Did you fucking hear me??? Seize and control!!" They are nothing more than the objects he uses to make more money for himself, and losing is not an option.
