I remember in the future, when ippo had to defense his japanese title against a random boxer and he was so calmed like Ricardo Martinez.

Ricardo Martinez didn't even take a back step to counter it and didn't need to guard to get exact timing to counter it. Basically, Ricardo Martinez doesn't have any blind spots to get punched.

This particular style of Ricardo, which consists of pressuring is the opposite of Ippo Ippo pressures you with his body moving forward with tight defense and tight punches (Mike Tyson style) But Ricardo is like his kriptonite, he basically counters everything with maintaining distance with a perfect right jab and hitting you with precise power Ricardo here and manga seems to use the ability he has of controlling his and his opponents pace by almost coping their leg movement so his punches always connect + the fact he uses his shoulders to maintain posture and always be centered. To win against this seemingly awkward but rather perfect by book fighter style we need to really take a page of Ippo’s book: With the tight defense like the peekaboo or just a rather high guard move constantly forward with small punches in try to not let him pick up the pace, so to conclude more of a like pressuring forward, so he gets tight up in the ropes and after that, we rather use a brawl style to not let him pick up the pace because his strongest ability is know how to pick up the pace and tempo can switch it up whenever you likes because he himself discovers what tempo is your fighting so with a brawl is always confusing and random so he would have to risk to counter while being in a position to being countered himself.

It feels funny that in later season everyone theorises a plan to take down the Dempsey roll and the ultimate conclusion evryone even the opponent come up with was to back up a little have ippo in your vision and then land a counter whereas Ricardo in a earlier season is like nah I'd do my own thing

Ippo too predictable with the dempsey roll and his timing made it too easy for Martinez. Also not using feints or his footwork to get off the centerline, he needs to change up his rhythm too, that's why he got nailed with the jab repeatedly like clockwork
@chestercastaneda49203 ай бұрын
In fairness to Ippo, he did try a feint. The problem is that Ricardo can read feints.

I dont understand one thing though, Ricardo is fast ong, but his invisible jab also comes from him directly poinitng his left in opponents eye, for him to think that his glove is getting biiger, however, Ippo like moves his head left-right like maniac so how did this work? Shouldn't have ippo easily see some of the Ricardo's attacks? Or is Ricardo so fast that he actually managed to redirect his left to Ippo's eye and throw punch in such an short amount of time? I wrote an essay but no one's reading it I guess :(
@Shindenize6 ай бұрын
Martinez is not simply "punch the left eye". The whole reason why Ippo cannot dodge the punches is because Martinez perfected his left jab so much that he does not telegraph the punch like a normal skilled boxer would. Ippo DOES SEE the jabs, but it is already too late for him to even guard or sway. Couple that with Martinez's freakish speed and accuracy, his jab will just hit every time. During that moment Ippo is doing the Dempsey Roll, Martinez is able to punch Ippo still because of just sheer predictive skill honed thru experience. Sure it is the first time he saw the Dempsey Roll, but Martinez is experienced enough to predict the right timing to his jabs.

@@Shindenize So It was more of counter than speed, understandable, definitely much stronger than Sawamura, so Ippo even now cant compare to him
@Shindenize6 ай бұрын
@@lukashalamberidze9282 Martinez is basically a monster. His jab is way different than even Sawamura. Sawamura's jab is designed to break defenses for his Pistol Punch. Martinez is using the jab at it's most perfected form, designed to just bypass defenses by being so fast and undetectable and accurate. It's not even a counter per se, but it's just a pure jab with pure accuracy. On top of that, he secretly steps in at the last second of the jab to trick his opponent into thinking he cannot reach. This is something that Martinez's real life counterpart, Ricardo "Finito" Lopez does all the time.

That jab is not anime overexageration. If youve ever spared against a semi pro with a fast and good jab.From your perspective as a fighter you can see the punch sometimes specially against someone who doesnt telegraph their punches. It really feels like your getting hit with punches you cant see coming. Its a vety humbling experience.
