I fractued my ankle many months ago, it has been fully healed for a while but my achilies still just feels tight and my knees cannot go over my toes. Are static stretches recommended?
@TreatMyAchilles
@TreatMyAchilles Күн бұрын
It is difficult to give a safe answer because it would depend on what is going on with your Achilles - if it is just tightness and not injured, then yes, static stretches can be useful, especially for post fracture rehab. Just always be sensible. Holding a super strong stretch for 2min is not a good idea. But doing several reps of 30 to 60 sec stretches at a sensible intensity can be OK.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but if you have insertional tendinopathy, I would avoid all stretches and avoid doing my strength training (initially) into the stretch positions.

Thanks for this video. I started having achilles issues nearly two years ago. I haven't had direct pain for a year only soreness on palpation - if I pinch the achilles right after activity, whether running, cycling, walking. Would love to hear how you think about that symptom!
@TreatMyAchilles
@TreatMyAchilles Күн бұрын
Sounds like your Achilles has fully recovered - you can ignore that "pain". That sensitivity you are describing is quite normal to have for a long time after recovery - it is like the pain sensors holds on to a memory of the injury and as long as you continue to pinch and check for it, it will remain because you keep alerting the brain to it.

This has been such a great video to watch! I've tried acupunture, ultrasound, shock wave therapy nothing has had a long term benefit. So the doctors said I could have steroid injection and I immediately refused. I want to get to the bottom of it not mask my pain even further. What I got from your video is keep at it with rehab and ill see positive changes! I have periods of no pain/stiffness at all and them BHAM its back! Which causes me so much anxiety..Thank you for this amazing vid you know exactly what your talking about! I've suffered with this on and off for more than 15 years! And I still don't know what triggered it in the first place😢 my ones in the mid zone. Im doing the heel drops on stairs as well as the sitting down raises. Anything I could possiblly change/add to my diet?

I do have fibromyalgia really bad & she thinks it's nerve damage, what can be done to stop the pain I am all ready on a lot of pain relief & I take anti-inflammatories Iv done the stretching , iv bought a massage roller None of it has helped its getting worse

We can't really tell what is right for you to do without actually having assessed your foot. In our experience, one of the most common things that can make heel pain worse is when people do stretching exercises for it because it pulls on the painful area. So stopping any stretches might be a good idea. Then, it might also help if you wear shoes with a heel on them or use inserts that lift the heel a bit because that reduces the strain on that area - we explain it in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdiqpbFhsNnJh5s.html If you want help figuring this out and with getting back to your normal activities, this is something that our team of physios can assess and help you with via video call. And what happens if it is in the dorsiflexion position when it is painful? I have been having pain in my right ankle for 5 years now. One minute I am okay, the next I feel like something is pinching my ankle. I can have the pain for an hour, a day or 48 hrs. The last time it happened (a week ago) it hurt for a week. Then suddenly I feel like a crack and then I can move normally, as if the pain never existed. However, it is not in the back part of the ankle. It is in my right side of the ankle. Sometimes it expands to the anterior, posterior and other side (left) of the ankle. It started after I healed from an injury. They have done mri, x-rays, scan, ultrasounds, etc., everything is normal. After months and years of physiotherapy nothing has change. They were not sure what it was for the past 5 years. They thought it was because of the injury. One dr. said it was tendinitis, and gave me some orthotics, but they only made it worse. Then my other dr. said it was because of my arch and change my old orthotics to arch support orthotics. After 5 weeks of using them without really helping, he changed his approach and said that in my mri (or in the x-ray) and said that it was an ankle impingement due to Stieda process. He said that he was going to consult with a colleague that is an ankle specialist, and that if the non-invasive treatments didn’t work, I might need an arthroscopy. He is still reviewing my case because he is not 100% sure if that is my diagnosis. What you explain here is the closest to what I compare my symptoms, however it is the dorsiflexion that it is painful, and it is not in the back of the ankle, but in my lateral side.
@TreatMyAchilles
@TreatMyAchilles 4 күн бұрын
In fast bowlers in cricket it is also dorsiflexion that cause it - it has to do with in some people the joint slides back in that dorsiflexion and causes the impingement.
@iacobp
@iacobp 5 күн бұрын
Thank you for this very informative video! I have a question regarding posterior ankle impingement. Is it common for the pain to come on very acutely and sharply, but then subside quickly, leaving the ankle feeling almost normal until the next triggering movement? What could be causing this kind of intermittent pain?
@TreatMyAchilles
@TreatMyAchilles 4 күн бұрын
What you describe is typical for a joint that has something that catches in certain positions - the pain is intense when it catches but as soon as you move it so it releases the pain subsides. It can be a loose body (small piece of bone or cartilage drifting) or it can be a little bone growth, or it can be a part of the joint capsule (soft tissue that holds the joint together) that folds in and catches.

I've been running (maybe twice a month) in Altras for a year or so and they're really comfortable and enjoy them, however I did have some ITBS issues initially and now more recently the Achilles tendonitis. But after this video and what you said about doing other activities for periods of time in between runs has made me realise that me wearing ankle supporting hiking boots everyday over long distances in steep slippery terrain (for my job) has probably not helped my feet, ankles and legs adjust to the zero drop running! Would some barefoot running (on your toes) help strengthen the feet/ankles/legs for zero drop shoes or should I switch back to conventional shoes?
@TreatMyAchilles
@TreatMyAchilles 4 күн бұрын
You've been using the zero drop for a year, so I think you just overdid it a bit. You will first have to allow the Achilles to calm down and settle so regular running shoes might help you stay active while you treat the Achilles. But then after that, you need to just think about how you are managing your training load week on week and ease back into the zero drop. But I would also add in regular strength training for the Achilles as soon as it can tolerate it. I don't see the point of barefoot running if you're already using zero drop. But I can't really know if my advice is safe for you if I don't fully understand your situation. Neither - off-loading the painful area using the correct shoes and stopping activities that increase strain there (like stretches) is most important. heloo from aus, im currently dealing with outer heel pain that ive been trying to fix for 5 years, many podiatrists, dr's, physio's, a spine specialist, soft tissue expert have been seen and nobody has any idea. both heels, on the edge burn after prolonged standing, its getting worse so i cant stand for much longer then half hour to an hour usually, no protaned or supernated feet, running or walking generally doesnt hurt, only standing still, no nerve issues, my pelvis is anteriorally tilted and used to suffer back issues but thats all sorted now as my hip flexors were tight but foot pain is getting worse. standing in a hot shower is something that seems to allow me to stand longer, ive watched endless videos on heel pain and nothing matches up, its not a plantar issue and theres no pain anywhere else, just the corners of my heels and can somewhat radiate toward the arch, but mostly the heel. please please help if you can, ive got no idea what to do from here.
