By the thumbnail, I would put my bishop on b8 forcing blacks bishop off of the b8- h2 diagonal. Once I move my bishop to promote the b-pawn, I imagine black would play Ba7. I would then sacrifice my bishop on the a7-g1 diagonal to lure the bishop from the defense of the pawn promotion. From there, it should be a pretty straightforward checkmate. The king and pawn endgame is also winning for white, so black really can't afford to trade.

Its important to mention, that this only works when the pawn is either on the b or g file. On any other file blacks bishop cant be forced of the short diagonal, as there are at least 2 squares for him.

I got it instantly and was baffled when you said the pawn push was most natural when the opponent’s zugzwang and the option to shoulder the king was literally the first thing I noticed. although my instinct was to be greedy and take the pawn so I don’t win the bonus points. 1200 gang represent.
4:54 What if white plays Kc5?How does black get more than a draw? If Rc1, white repeats Kd6. If Ra1 again, white repeats. Black can perhaps play Ka1, putting white in zugzwang, but white can just alternate between Kd6 and Kd5. What's the winning maneuvre?
@ChessCrafters-lk4dv9 күн бұрын
Rd1, Rd6 by black, and if white tries to defend with Kc5 again and thinking to promote next turn, than Rd8. Black plan is to wait and until the white king is too far away from defending the B pawn and capturing afterwards.
@whycantiremainanonymous80919 күн бұрын
@@ChessCrafters-lk4dv Thanks, first of all! I'm trying to figure it out in detail. So, Kc5, Rd1; Kb5, Rd6; Kc5 Rd8; Kb5 What now? If Rc8, Ka5. It looks like black is winning with Rc6 (a8=Q+, K×a8; Kb5, Kb7), white still has the resource of playing Kb5 first. Now it's R×b6+ and either Ka5 or Kc5, followed by Ra6 (only move), and only then can the a pawn be safely taken, without losing the rook. Unless I'm missing another defensive resource for white?
@arnejoppien9 күн бұрын
I think that after 1.Kc5 the quickest winning moves for Black are simply 1...Ra6 and 1...Rb1. White is in zugzwang after 1...Ra6! and ...Rb1! and is forced to move his King away from his Pawn b6, and then Black wins with 2...Rxb6(+)
@whycantiremainanonymous80919 күн бұрын
And if a8=Q+, R×a8. Looks like it works!

Without watching the video first, I think I see it. White has to take the diagonal away from the black bishop. The only way to do that is to maneuver the white bishop to b8 while denying a7 to the black bishop.
@ChessCrafters-lk4dv12 күн бұрын
This is the correct idea, to deflect that bishop from guarding the B8 square

@7:05 Ehat happens if black promotes instead of Kb7?
@ChessCrafters-lk4dv12 күн бұрын
You promote as well, and black couldn't convert this because he has no way of skewering your king and queen. All he can do are checks. If he stop giving checks, than you would start checking until a draw is achieve
@CarlosSamuel-ms9ee11 күн бұрын
@@ChessCrafters-lk4dv Thanks for the response. Is K+Q vs K+Q+P usually a draw if the pawn isn't about to promote then? You might think that provided you own queen defends the paint, that your king could work its way towards it for shelter. It is an interesting and surprising position for sure. I could possibly have drawn it playing it out, but I certainly did not see all the little details ahead of time. Knowing the Reti position leads you to a lot of the right moves on principle though.

Hi, I have a question concerning an endgame where you have a queen, and the opponent has a pawn. The king is next to the pawn and they are one or two squares from promotion to queen. your king is at a distance where it is not relevant for the moment. I can't seem to be able to stop that pawn from queening only with my queen. Is there a technique for such scenarios?

@@ChessCrafters-lk4dv Thanks. Waiting.
@Scmonk8 күн бұрын
It depends on where the pawn and the king are placed. In some scenarios its a dead draw, as the queen cant capture the pawn because of stalemate and the king cant come closer because of the threat promotion. In other scenarios you can force the king in front of the pawn, giving your king the time to get closer and capture the pawn. You should really study these positions, as they are really easy to learn and will prevent you from throwing away a won position, or possibly keep you from loosing a drawn position.

If the pawn is only on its sixth rank than the K+Q should win if they move first. If the pawn is already on its seventh rank, then a pawn on the a-, c-, f- or h-file should get a draw.
