Female tennis of those years was unbearable, I remember happily skipping it, with very few exceptions.

I was a little kid just starting to play tennis and get into tennis at my Mom’s and Dad’s local club, but I remember the smack-talk from Hana before this contest and Chris had been struggling with the new racquet … but Hana ate a heaping helping of crow on this day. THIS was the match wherein Chris finally began to get a “feel” for her new racquet and turn things around. She skinned Hana from her head to her toes.

Kinda mad with Tracy Austin for skipping this slam after ending Chris’ 125 winning streak in clay a few weeks earlier. Not saying she would have repeated the win but had a good chance and for sure would’ve been a tough final.

Back when Tennis was graceful and players had their own individual styles. Not like today where they are just two handed clones.

Wendy turnbull is such an underrated player. 3 major singles final, 4 other major singles semis, 8 straight years in the singles top 10, 4 major doubles titles, and 11 other major doubles finals.

Such a pity Tracy Austin skipped the 1979 French Ooen. She’d ended Chris’ 125 match win streak in clay in Rome a few weeks earlier and then returned to the US. I’m sure it would have been a hard fought Evert-Austin final in ‘79.

Such a shame Tracy Austin skipped Paris that year having ended Chris’ 125 clay winning streak a couple of weeks earlier in Rome. The French deserved an Evert v Austin final that year.

I always thought this match was one of Chrissie's finer moments. Hana showed no respect and Evert put the hammer down

It is surprising to see Chris Evert hit out in the tiebreak. Usually, she plays conservatively when she is in a tight spot and was prone to losing in her later years. Lindqvist seemed like a solid player, but I don't remember seeing her or hearing her name during that time.

Chris forced herself just to play slightly better than Evonne . Both suffering from their time of the month , both seemed hampered mobility wise. Chris plods along indifferent to her simple errors, errors one would make in practice and this is a Wimbledon SF. For Chris who at this stage , this year since 74 played in 3 of the 4 slam events , this is one of the top 6 matches of the year for her. Chris approaches this match as if it were an exhibition in Akron, Ohio. Nothing against Akron.

There's a video here on youtube now where Kathleen talks about this match and her famous win over Martina Navratilova at the French Open that year. Kathleen mentioned her general good form that spring, and how she was physically exhausted in this match from her 3 hour semi final against Andrea Jaegar. She talked about how the cold weather made her feel even worse here as she was still so stiff from that match. With regard to the Martina match, she said she went into it without much thought at all she'd been on such a tight schedule. She mentioned though how in the morning of the match when she was practicing, she felt she was hitting the ball really well. She also commented on how she always felt Martina was mentally fragile, even at her peak. She thought that famous swagger Martina had was overcompensation for her self doubt. She said "With Martina, if you won the first game she'd already be looking over at her box and asking then 'what should I do?'' She said after the match at the net, Martina jokingly said to her "Nice match, bitch!"

1979 was a cruel year for Chris. She lost to Austin for first time early winter, beat her in an excellent match t clairol crown then got married and took time off then lost Italian to Austin 7-6 in third on clay ending her 125match win streak on clay. Then she beat Martina at eastborne 13-11 only to lose Wimbledon final in two exactly same sets 5-2 down to lose both sets 6-4. She was never warmed up it seemed , but retina hit hard and low in this match. Then at Bergin., mahaw NJ beat Austin in 3 sets then loses to Austin playing half scared just hitting off her back foot standing often , afraid to drive the ball until 5-2 down , once again Chris’s pride kicked in with Tracy serving at 5-3 15-40. Chris returned a second serve in bottom of the net on her first break point. A wild error. And lost 6-3 and the title. The next year she beat Martina at W and Austin at the open to reclaim world number one for 1980,1981

Sue Barker said years later that she wished they had scheduled this match before the Evert / Wade one. She said that knowing Wade was already in the final put extra pressure on her here and it affected her badly. She felt that if this match had been played first, she would have won.

You can see here that, apart from Austin, there was just nobody on the women's tour back then whose groundstrokes and backcourt game was anywhere near as solid as Chris's.

I so miss this type of tennis. Just watched a first round match from Doha and it was literally just boom boom boom boom tennis. No finesse. No point construction. It's just not enjoyable to watch anymore. Not to mention the annoying screeches and grunts that are so unnecessary.
