Ii would seen and hear the Four Freshman every year as a teenager at Indiana Beach and got to sit with Bob Flanagan for 20 minutes on the night of my second wedding in Denver. I have been big fans for almost as long as they have been singing.

Hello, Jim!! Greetings from São José dos Campos, state of São Paulo, Brazil!! Thank you very much for posting this recording. I've always been a fan of Ed Ames and even more so when in the 1970s I learned that he was one of the members of the "Ames Brothers". I really appreciated his performance in the series "Daniel Boone", playing the Indian "Mingo". Unfortunately he passed away in May/2023, but he will never be forgotten. I listened to this recording of "Moonlight Serenade" only a few times and it was with great joy that I found its publication last year, but only now I decided to write to you and thank you. I would also like to ask you if you know who is the singer who appears in the movie "The Glenn Miller Story", interpreting a short excerpt from that song. I tried several times but I couldn't find out her name and if there is that complete recording. Thank you in advance for any information. A big hug and have a great week. A lovely rendition of the chorus, but nobody will ever equal Billie Holiday's first recording--which includes the verse. They went out of fashion, for some reason. Even Billie dropped it later. To me, the song isn't complete without that opening. It's just a pretty love song when you sing only the chorus. This is a song of utter devastation and loneliness, with just the slightest tincture of hope. I think one reason she's not as well-remembered as she ought to be today is that she was managed and promoted more as a pop star than a jazz singer. Pop tends to date badly. At her peak, she was the most popular female singer. Her best stuff still holds up beautifully. But she's fallen down the list quite a bit because they didn't let her show her full depth a lot of the time. Well, she and her husband had a very comfortable retirement, stayed active, happy, enjoyed a long life together. Now look at the lives Billie Holiday and Anita O'Day had. They suffered like hell for their art. Anita outlived the bad times, but probably never fully recovered from their effect. I don't think Jo would necessarily feel like the highest level of artistic immortality was worth a life of regrets. Though I suppose everyone has them. She had a great career, and nothing to be ashamed of. Some of her renditions are among the very best. I wouldn't say this one was, in spite of how beautiful her voice is. She's just a 'sweet singer' here--she was capable of much more than that.

In the 1960s when I was about 12, as a special holiday treat we would go ice-skating in Brighton. After an hour or so the rink would be cleared so that the pofessional skaters could dance, and this was the tune they always played. Very happy memories.
