I took a Brown Belt test from Yamada Sensei way back in March of 1967. This was in Melbourne Florida, and I was a 17 year old kid. On that day I had my first taste of being a "guest" in a rival school. My instructor was John Fields, he always wanted us to not land hard or slap the mat, but to use that kinetic energy to roll out and stand up immediately. After the regular defense techniques I was put up against a simultaneous attack by 4 adults. I was so small and skinny that the audience broke out into laughter, but only briefly. It was my first experience (on the mats) of defending against a gang attack, and Yamada Sensei seemed rather pleased with my performance. Shortly after High School I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, and I could not find an Aikido school that had a good "vibe," so I took up Tai-Chi and Pa-Kua. Nevertheless, Aikido is my first love.
