Hmm, I prefer to meander aimlessly until the band-leader pulls my guitar cable out of my amp! ;^p Great lesson on an important topic, thanks!

Larry Coryell told that Miles Davis said to him "never end/finnish phrase"... 🤔 Maybe some mystic mambo jambo by Miles 😬

Well I suppose Miles has opinions, but it’s probably a good skill to have in order to play jazz

This is a great video! Concepts I understood, but how you explain them is a great reinforcement. I'd love exercises and licks to add to my "library" for this.

Hey thanks so much! I'm also striving for clarity in my teaching, so I'm glad that is coming through. Make sure to check out the etude at the end for more exercises with this concept!

I love your lessons . In this lesson I didn’t understand how if I have G B D F for G7 why in the first example did you play a D# ? In the second example you have Bb? Etc …
@NathanBortonMusicКүн бұрын
This is because I am using the altered tones of the dominant chord for the line closers. The first half of the lesson I cover line closers off the normal chord tones of G7, then the second half I talk about the ones off the altered tones being b9 (Ab) #9 (Bb) b5 (Db) #5 (D#). Hope that helps! I personally enjoy the altered one as it creates more of a pull to the one chord than the normal ones, but sound more tense

It’s a phrase that I use on some video thumbnails to draw in viewers. It’s simply a marketing tool. It’s worked very well on pervious videos, so I kept using it. As someone who is actually trying on KZfaq marketing is key. I’m always looking for better ways to package the videos Because I believe my content is worth it. Sorry the thumbnail offend you… but I’d encourage to watch what this video has to offer! Triads are such a useful tool!

Nathan ,I love your playing. Your lessons are full of important info. Can you tell me what Amp are you using? You get a great sound from that beautiful Benedetto guitar. Warm,crisp,punchy. Very clear notes on the 5th and 6th strings. Great lessons. Please keep them coming. You have a lot of really good things to say.!! It is greatly appreciated. By the way, Wes was my first Jazz Guitar hero back in the 60's. I think Wes was one the Greatest Jazz Guitarist that ever lived. Thanks.!!

Hi Danny, thanks for your kind words! I acually don't use an amp but rather a pre-amp that goes straight into my DAW via DI. I use the golden age mkiii! I have a link in the video description if your interested in purchasing one!

That was an awful melodic line, 😳 let me get out of here before my musicality is ruined. 😱😨🙉
@NathanBortonMusic10 күн бұрын
hmmm sorry you feel that way! I suppose people have different definitions of melodic. I consider melodic when people take a motif and develop it in their solo (like Jim hall) and like this video teaches. I hope your musicality is still in tact!
@godzoo1810 күн бұрын
@@NathanBortonMusic I like how you attempted to make a link between Jim Hall and this video.. when Jim Hall was a melodic wizard but your line was one of the most unmelodic things I have ever heard played on a guitar. It jarred me so badly I had to stop the video immediately.
@NathanBortonMusic10 күн бұрын
@@godzoo18 Well I got the idea from Jim Hall’s masterclass linked in the video description. In the video he goes over a tune that he wrote over the changes to “Someday My Prince Will Come.” He talks about taking a note cell and moving it around through the changes. I doubt you watched my whole video since you hated it so much but I literally do the same thing as Jim did on his contrafact. Now my application of it will not sound like Jim, it sounds like me because I have my own voice but the process is the same. Honestly I’m happy my playing moved you so much!
@acwatercolors10 күн бұрын
You make it very clear as always, thanks for your video !
@godzoo189 күн бұрын
@@NathanBortonMusic Sorry I could not go further into your video. That first part was more than I could bare. One can not just sling any old group of notes together and call it a melodic line. There are certain aesthetic rules or even mathematical or universal rules on note choice, note order and placement etc that differentiate an inately exquisite moment of sheer auditory joy from an jagged, angular, jarring, not well thought out or wrecklessly archetectually designed piece of torture. I guess that's what seperates the men from the boys and people like Jim Hall from everyone on Youtoob..

to my knowledge he was not educated on music theory which proves that the natural gift of learning by ear is the outcome of his beautiful tone.
@NathanBortonMusic10 күн бұрын
I don’t know how much theory Wes knew. However, transcribing his solos you see him use these sounds a lot! So wether he knew the theory or not, we knew playing A-7 over D-7 sounded the way we liked, which is why this video exists (for us mortals who can’t hear like Wes)

Wonderful instrument, really good. There is a level of connection with an instrument the listener is not aware of, I know this very well (but there are expensive and really cheap guitars which give me such a feeling, for me it depends mainly on dynamic capabilities, string separation and overtone qualitiy, alle without amplification). I don't like the sound of your plek scraping the strings, either it has a rough blade (can be smoothed with fine sandpaper) or it's the material. Also, well played!
