does it really help with urine smell?
@TheArtymuse
@TheArtymuse 2 ай бұрын
I think so. The smell does begin to build up once the pee pad has absorbed as much as it can, but as long as you replace it regularly, it works really well. Plus, it keeps your cat from having to dig through clumped chunks of pee like in a regular litter box so they don't track the smell around the house. I've modified my box over the years, so I don't need to spend money on the pads. But it does mean I have to clean it out a little more often. Overall, I think the Breeze system is a better alternative going by cleanliness, cost, maintenance, and odor.

Why even need pee pad, just let the pee go into the tray and empty it in thr toilet each day?
@TheArtymuse
@TheArtymuse 4 ай бұрын
That's a good observation. I think it's mostly because the pad is treated with chemicals that help to neutralize the urine odor. But also, the way they designed the tray makes it a messy to try and tip to drain into the toilet. Thanks to a bunch of other commenters I have since swapped out the whole bottom piece for a solid litter tray of similar size that I can easily empty out into the toilet. The urine odor is very noticeable after a few days that way, so I have to empty it more often. However, you save money not having to buy the pee pads.

Hii o w would you recommend switching from litter to pellet
@TheArtymuse
@TheArtymuse 5 ай бұрын
I think it depends on a few factors. Some cats can be allergic to the dust from traditional clay or other clumping litter, so pellet litter is usually a good alternative. However, some cats are very particular about texture or have sensitive paws and refuse to use pellet litter. So they might start going potty in other places instead of the litter box. I switched my cats to the Breeze pellet system because I hated how much the clumping litter tracked all over the house and how much I was spending on litter. With the litter tray draining out the urine, I only need to scoop out the poop, so I'm not throwing away tons of litter every time. If you're considering the switch, I recommend setting up two litter boxes side by side; one with traditional litter and the other with pellets. Then you can see if your cats are cool with using the pellets. You could also try mixing the pellets into the traditional litter, and as you throw away regular scoopings, only add pellets back in until it's mostly pellets left. That helps your cat adapt to the change. Hope that helps!

@@TheArtymuse , thank you for responding to my question. What I’m looking for and saw on KZfaq, is a hack for creating a larger place for the pine litter that becomes sawdust when the cat urinates, thus eliminating the need for the tray that comes with the system. The Breeze System then sits on top of a regular litter box and you can go up to 2,weeks before cleaning the sawdust away. I hope this makes sense. There is a lady that demonstrates this hack, but her video is 6 years old and she was using the Original Size Breeze System.

@janettecarrell Oh, now i understand. I ended up doing the same with one of my XL systems, too. The base measures approximately 18" by 26.5". Luckily, the big plastic mortar mix tub I was using for their crystal litter before the Breeze system was a little bigger than that. So while it's not a perfect fit, it will hold up the inner green litter pan and white walls top piece. This is what I use, but you might be able to find something that fits better...www.homedepot.com/p/Plasgad-20-9-Gal-Black-Large-PVC-Concrete-Mixing-Tub-887102C/205451585 I just like that it's more heavy duty and cheaper than the plastic tubs marketed as litter boxes. The entryway's approximate width is 8 inches and the top is completely open. You could leave the white top wall part off until she no longer needs the e-collar if you don't think she'll do her "business" over the sides. Optionally, I recommend getting one of those big deep mortar mix tubs from Home Depot or Lowe's to use as a litter box with pine or paper pellet litter. They're a lot less expensive than actual litter boxes that size and a thicker, more durable plastic.

I know this is a bit of an older video, but I just adopted a cat and got this litter box and the pee/ammonia smell is pretty intense in less than 24 hours. The pad is pretty soaked each morning so I have to change the pad every morning :/ Am I missing something obvious or has anyone experienced this before?
@TheArtymuse
@TheArtymuse 10 ай бұрын
Hello! That is odd, especially strong odors and full saturation after only 24 hours. One pad usually lasts my 4yo female cat about 10 days. Has your new cat seen a vet recently? Some illnesses and/or medications can affect the amount they pee and how it smells. But if kitty has a clean bill of health, maybe they just naturally pee a lot, and the pad can't keep up. I have 2 XL systems and one of them I removed the whole gray base part and put the top parts over a mortar mix tub I got at Home Depot (See link below) instead. Then i put an inch of recycled paper or pine pellet litter in there to absorb the pee. Since those are cheaper, more absorbant, and I can sprinkle on baking soda for additional odor control. That might work better for you since that box gets used by my 4 other male cats, and it does a great job at minimizing the pee smell. www.homedepot.com/p/Plasgad-20-9-Gal-Black-Large-PVC-Concrete-Mixing-Tub-887102C/205451585

I'm glad it helped! Yes, about the only time I need to change out ALL the pellets is if one of my kitties has diarrhea. Otherwise, they stay pretty clean, and I add clean pellets just to top it up and replace what gets thrown away with scooping. I've also received comments from other people who decided to use cheap pine pellet litter instead. I tried it too, and it works, but since the pine pellets break down when they get moist, I ended up doing more maintenance cleaning up all the sawdust from the litter pan grate and the floor around the box.

Why are the slits only in the middle, what if the cat goes in a corner and the pee won’t ever go down.
@TheArtymuse
@TheArtymuse 11 ай бұрын
The green litter tray is shaped like a shallow bowl with the slits located at the lowest point. So, any liquid will still drain down. I believe they engineered it that way to be compatible with the existing pee pads. Since those aren't as wide as the XL, they only put the slits over the width of the pee pad tray below. Hope that helps!

Does tractor supply sell the zeolite pellets? If so, that would be awesome. Or are you referring to the pine pellets? I've tried using the pine pellets instead of the Breeze zeolite pellets before as a cheaper alternative. They work alright, but they are definitely more messy because they break down and turn to sawdust with moisture. The zeolite pellets are a solid mineral and can actually be cleaned and re-used if you don't want to keep buying and replacing them. If your cat has nice solid poops the pellets actually stay pretty clean and don't need to be replaced for a long while; just topped up to replace whatever sticks to the waste and gets scooped out.

Very true. My big orange cat, Rocket, was extremely picky about the size of his litter box and was the whole reason I upgraded to the XL system. The other alternative was one of those big black mortar mix tubs from Home Depot. The size was perfect, and they are much cheaper (and more durable) than an actual litter box. I bet if you bought two and drilled a bunch of holes in one, you could create a big sifting litter box system out of them. Might be worth a shot? Hi! I currently have 5 cats and they share 3 litter boxes (2 of the XL systems and 1 of the regular size Breeze systems). I have definitely noticed I spend a lot less money on litter maintenance and supplies. And I don't break my back lugging around huge bags of cat litter anymore or cleaning up granules from the floor constantly. The pee pads are probably the biggest expense with these systems, but many people have commented about using alternatives. One of my favorites has been putting down a litter box liner bag in the bottom tray under the green pan and filling that liner with some cheap pine pellet litter. The pellets absorb the urine and do a decent job of odor control. Then I just cinch up the bag and toss it out when the pellets start getting over saturated and no longer control the smell. Some people even use the pine pellet litter in the top tray as well instead of the Breeze zeolite pellets, but I don't like to do that since they tend to break down and the sawdust clogs up the grate in the pan. I think I saw a good DIY litter box video that may work well for you. I'll look for it and reply with the link later. I wish you the best of luck with whichever method you end up going with. 👍

(causing breathing issues too..for the cats AND me ) I'm going with PINE HORSE BEDDING from the farm store--- it's KILN DRIED- so the pine resin is all gone- and no danger to the cats or me-- and will turn to SAWDUST so no PUPPY PAD needed.... and it's cheap $5.99 a 40 pound bag- AND compostable... for plants.. I will compost that and eggshells and other leftovers-- and make my roses more beautiful next year.. :)

That sounds like a great idea! Litter dust was also a reason I switched as well. I found that you can use those litter box liner bags to line the lower base to catch all the sawdust if you want to go with a pine pellet, and it makes clean up very easy. Another method I have tried is to use a regular solid litter pan in place of the gray base to collect the liquid waste. Then, I just empty it into the toilet every few days, and there is no need to buy the absorbent pads for the tray. Very cost saving. Best of luck to you and your kitty!

Hi! I'm not certain what you mean by urine dust. The mineral sediment in the cat's urine? Coming straight from the cat, pretty much everything drains through to the pad tray below, but I have noticed, after having the systems for several years, that mineral deposits will build up on the green inner litter tray. And the pellets are meant to be changed out and disposed of, rather than cleaned. Does that help?

Short of having a two foot tall Maine Coone or Savanah cat, the walls of the XL system should be tall enough for domestic cat breeds. 😉 Cleanliness will also depend heavily on the consistency of your kitties' poop. They swell up a lot when liquid hits them and I made the mistake of putting in too many at first and it made a big mess when I went to pull the tray out. 😬 One other thing you can try is using those trash bag style litter box liners in the gray base, under the lime green litter pan. Then put the pellets on the liner to soak up and neutralize the pee. Then when you need to clean it out you can just remove the top pieces, cinch up the liner bag, and toss it out with the trash. Then you won't even need to rinse out or deodorize the base or tray.

Thank you so much for this review!! Great video, cats are cute, and the demo was a nice touch. My senior cat was doing the same thing and I'm glad to know it is worth it
