How in the Here was this supposed to be a replacement for Malcolm in the Middle??? I'm so confused 😅 Also, I completely forgot about Father of the Pride, and how badly NBC tried to promote it.
@Telehell
@Telehell 21 күн бұрын
Something I forgot to mention; when this aired, it was one year since The X-Files ended; so that left their 9PM hour on Sunday's open..All that said, I think Beene was less a Replacement of Malcolm and more of a supplement to it.

On the topic of Chris Elliott being a cast member this season. Did Cabin Boy really sink his career that bad?
@Telehell
@Telehell Ай бұрын
At the time, it did--though thanks to passing time, the movie elevated to "Cult Classic" status; It still boggles my mind that somebody who already had a career would go slumming it on SNL at one of its many low points. Thankfully, his career rebounded more or less since then thanks to numerous guest appearances on TV shows, as well as his role on "Schitt's Creek"

To hear your summation, it sounds like you think SNL is currently doing well. I find that interesting because you said something to the effect of SNL is good when it remembers that it is a comedy show first and foremost. I think SNL is currently more focused on politics and pandering to the vocal minority on social media than it is to delivering a humorous show.
@Telehell

To be clear & speaking as a longtime/ongoing fan, SNL (to me) is currently "Just Doing OK"; it's more than likely *Never* going to reach the heights of creativity/humor/popularity/counterculture of its first (say) 18 years on the air--or if it still can, it happens once in a RARE while, like just last week with that "Beavis & butthead" sketch that nearly broke everybody--but if you look at things from a distance, the show now is really no different than what it's been doing since day one...Poking fun at what's hip/trendy/popular/newsworthy/political, no matter how much or how little bite there is left in the sketches themselves. The show hasn't "Overhauled" itself since 1995; and as long as both Lorne & NBC are happy with the way things are, the show will probably NEVER change until Lorne retires/dies...whenever that may be...but I'll still watch it in good times & bad b/c it shaped a lot of my life growing up, and at this point it's pretty much become "Comfort Food TV" to me.

@Telehell I watched the Beavis and Butthead sketch. It was definitely cracking up the cast, but it seemed like a "You had to be there," type of sketch. I'm hearing how good it was because the cast couldn't keep a straight face, not because it was actually funny. You state that the show is "Poking fun at what's hip/trendy/popular/newsworthy/political," but I don't think that it is. They poke fun at what is politically correct to make fun of. I remember when the show first released, and I was much too young to be up and watching it, and I would agree with your statement if it was about that era. I noticed the change during the Obama years. They stopped poking fun at the president. Since then, their political bias has been on full display. Can you imagine if Biden were president in '75 when SNL first aired? Every week, Chevy would have stumbled all over the stage and mumbled something incoherent. They definitely would have done a sketch about him showering with his daughter, his drug abusing son, and his dog biting everyone. The jokes write themselves! I understand your reluctance to break from something that has brought you joy throughout your life, but eventually, even Norman Bates' mom was removed from that rocking chair.

After listening to the Saget/ Boyz II Men section, the gag here comes from what Bob was known for at the time of airing: Saget, usually an R-rated comic, was starring on _Full House_ and hosting the original run of _America's Funniest Home Videos._ Saget had to do family-friendly stuff and there he is singing about lovemaking.

Truth to tell, I kinda liked this series ... except when Bob was on the screen. The relationship between God and the Devil was far more entertaining than anything else on the show. But when French Stewart's Bob shows up, he's just such a nothing character, and he's such a drag on the REAL meat of the show. And I hate French Stewart's voice anyway. My favorite moment in the series is when the Devil takes advantage of God's distraction in an episode, and the Devil flies up to heaven to legally acquire more souls for hell. But he gets bogged down by the insane paperwork and he eventually gets irritated and decides to return to hell. St. Peter offers the Devil the ONE soul that he acquired during his entire time in heaven -- and it turns out to be Richard Nixon. Devil: NO!! I don't want HIM in hell! It's not fair to my other guests! Nixon: Oh sure! You'd take JFK in a minute! Everybody LOVES Kennedy! You know he's still getting GIRLS up here?! The ANGELS think it's charming. I ask for one extra dessert, and "There's Greedy Dick Nixon stuffing his face with apple brown betty!" [The Devil starts inching away] WHERE ARE YOU GOING?! Devil: Me? Nowhere! Oh look, a communist!! Nixon: WHERE?! [The Devil promptly skedaddles.] 🤣🤣 The nutty "religious" crowd who opposed the show truly did not see what they were missing.

So let me get this straight: That "Commie Hunting Season" sketch originally aired in late 1980 and features Charles Rocket saying the N word, and yet he doesn't get fired until he says "fuck" live on the air (on the episode dated February 21, 1981)? Even back then, NBC had some shit double standards with their actors, I'm not surprised 😂
@Telehell
@Telehell 3 ай бұрын
In the most nominal of defenses I'm willing to give the sketch, (1) it was only the 2nd show of the "New" era; there's still a learning curve to be had among the cast/writers--also, whoever wrote the sketch should get just as much blame for writing the line in the first place. (2) NBC was in the ratings toilet, and they needed what few hits they had on the air to stay on until they could get their heads above water again, sort of a Catch-22 when their Late Night lineup pulled in the Most revenue back then.

I have heard and seen clips of the Elvis show and the Winter Magic show, never the Peanuts show (at least until this episode). They're all uniquely horrible in their own way. I'm surprised this wasn't a countdown of the worst of all time (including the post Michael shows). But as they say, this is better than nothing.
@Telehell
@Telehell 3 ай бұрын
The fact it wasn't a countdown was kinda by design (this being an "Induction" show instead of a standard countdown--see: our "Worst of SNL" episode); that, and things get a little iffy if we post anything with actual music in it... THAT being said, there were a few other halftime shows I wanted to talk about, but I always try to keep the show under an hour...Hopefully next year.

Considering how frosty (at best) the relationship between Silverman & Lorne were by the 5th season of SNL, it would've been...not "Impossible", but highly improbable...and besides, Silverman already had his hands full with "We Got it Made" the same season (*CoughEPISODE19cough*)

@Telehell Also, The New Show's entertainment news spoofs always reminded me of Mad TV's red carpet interviews and most of the premise of Hype (episode 77, no longer on KZfaq). So essentially The New Show's "Weekend Tonight" predated those two and no one noticed. (Honestly some of the sketches in this particular episode were so boring that I found the sound effects you used around them funnier by comparison)
