Ah, sh_t. Sorry. You are a good man, Claudio. I don't think I would be as forgiving of being run into like that. I hope SPOT comes through. Supplemental insurance is honestly mandatory for US bike racers nowadays. I did my collarbone almost exactly a year ago. My total medical bills were over $45K and I DIDN'T even have surgery (literally just didn't want to pay for it). I'm telling my story because I have the best insurance available to me (as part owner of a small company). The total cost for my "family plan" is over $25K/yr (I pay a bit over $10K out of pocket, the company pays the rest) but I still ended up on the hook for over $13K. It would've been over $16K if I haven't spent a crazy amount of time contesting most of the bills they barely paid (or straight up didn't pay - they literally rejected the entire cost of my ambulance ride). Anyway, don't be me, with my gross lumpy collarbone and monthly payments to two separate hospitals. Get extra coverage if you race. Oh, congrats on the bike being undamaged. Should've said that first, right?

Dude I saw you crash and heard you yelling on the ground from the start/finish. I was at the tent a bit later and the EMTs were asking me where they should put your bike and I said they should just leave it on the rack. Glad ur ok

Real sorry you had this crash. I had my own a few weeks ago. Not as severe but still a crash. I have a totally off topic question. What kind of mount did you use for your rear camera?

I broke my collarbone 1.5 years ago and had a lot of the same thoughts. I actually posted a KZfaq video about it as well. Regarding mindset and getting back into racing, I saw someone at the hospital who was t-boned while driving, and he was more messed up than I was. Life happens, shit happens, and cycling or racing isn't immune from that. But it's also not a reason to stop doing it.

Had a hard crash a few weeks ago resulting in Stage 3 shoulder separation and a couple broken ribs. Thought my season was toast. First week was rough, didn't get on the bike, couldn't sleep, uncomfortable all the time. Rested, upped my protein intake and things have come along. I was able to race at Ned Gravel last weekend and other than the Switzerland trail section I had no pain. Sleep is still rough and the shoulder can't do a lot of things yet, but riding actually feels pretty good.

Medical system should not work this way without also having a free public option. Having to swipe 11 grand on a credit card is ridiculous for medical care and Americans complain about being shaken down for a few hundred dollars by ambulance drivers in Mexico.

I feel your pain. I crashed and broke my collarbone 10 weeks ago , the break was much like yours broken and displaced . I broke mine on a gravel ride , not buy and idiot running into me . Wow I would have been pissed also. Heal fast , I was racing gravel seven weeks after my surgery.😃🚵♀️

Feels like in the US the ER is really milking it. Ive already had multiple fractures here in germany and the only time I was taken to MRI was when the xray wouldnt give a clear result. Here it seems like you get the full programm, just in case... but this just lets your medical bill explode.

This is EXACTLY the info I was looking for regarding the insurance. Have been considering licensing primarily for this coverage. Please focus on this a bit in your updates.

This is why I quit racing. I had a 1 month gap in insurance between jobs and didn't want to be financially ruined by another cyclist not paying attention or a random accident. Never went back to racing IRL.

I broke my humerus bone in a bike crash 1 month out of 3 right now. Doctor said no surgery just a brace and let it weld by itself. Spent 200 on a plastic brace they replaced 3 times my cement cast . I had employment insurance so at least i get paid 75% until i get back to work also the plastic brace and pills were covered by 70% . I have spent 300 the most. It was painful the first week but I am lucky it was not that bad financially. I live in Canada

Same thing happened to me yesterday! Some guy came from behind and crashed us + others out AFTER finishing the line. Makes it that much more infuriating when people make dangerous decisions like that. Thankfully I got away with a sprain and road rash. Best wishes and heal up Claudio!

All the way from Dubai, just subscribed Claudio. Great videos and you’re an inspiration watching your progress from Cat 5 to Cat 3. I also broke my collarbone 4.5 years ago, so hang in there buddy it gets better. But dang, I almost forgot about the healthcare system in the US and man those medical bills. After living overseas for 11 years, I’m returning to the US in 5-6 months and looking forward to racing back home. Thanks for the tip with supplemental insurance with USA cycling. Speedy recovery, hang in there!

Dude. It is 1000% the guy that hit you's fault. He wasn't paying attention to what was ahead of him, he was looking at his computer or his front tire or something. 1000% his fault. Do not be so forgiving. Stuff happens, but that guy taking you out is not the normal race stuff. Realistically you can't sue anyone in a race for something they did, because by racing you assume heightened risk. And I get it, stuff happens, people crash. But your crash was totally unnecessary and never should have happened. Absolutely ridiculous that he took you out.

Unfortunately might have to sue to help with your bills.

Speedy recovery, Claudio! I had my collarbone surgery after a bike crash in 2020, so I know exactly how you feel. Don't lose your spirit, don't look back thinking "I wish I wouldn't do <something>" or "I wish I did <other thing>". 👍👍

Did a superman 2 weeks before Ironman FL after hitting a deep patch of sand while in the aerobars. After the first two weeks of h3ll, the worst part is the need to always sleep on your back for many months after. Fortunately, you will recover. Wish you the best.

Make sure you follow your surgeon's advice about when to start using the arm. It would be a bummer to mess with the bone healing. I've broken my collarbones a total of 5(!) times and have had 3 surgeries. I've always waited 6 week before getting back on the bike. I'm an ER doc. No more crit racing for me.
