I saw clock island part 2. 😀 I enjoyed the sequel. Please keep posting. I’m a fan of your work. How about a video on how the rigging and sail lines work. What is a daggerboard, why do we use the winch? Is it reversible like a ratchet? What is a halyard? A video like that would be entertaining.

I missed this short video when it came out. It gives a good sense of how effortlessly the F-27 picks up speed in flat water. The lightning in the big thunderstorms at the end was magnificent. Have you been taking any interesting trips on your tri recently? That series of videos from Canada a year ago was excellent.

I am currently preparing a trip to the Dry Tortugas, probably next week. Tri is in the water in Sarasota. I have not sailed much in the past year, but that should change soon. Thanks for your comment!

To my understanding this is not a planing hull?
@tomaskryan6 ай бұрын
The F27 (trimaran) has a planing hull as oppose to displacement hull. Background: a typical monohull sailboat has a displacement hull, which has a defined maximum speed = 1.34 x sqrt(hull length). Planing hull do not have this speed limitation. There is much more to that, this is just the basics.
@CanadianDivergent6 ай бұрын
@@tomaskryan But what I am saying is the shape is not a true planing hull. I have studied Naval arch for years. that boat has possibly a semi displacement hull, but its not a true planing hull to my understanding. it has a speed limitation. i.e. if you put 100 hp outboard on it, it would not overcome its own bow wave and start to ride on the surface of the water. there's only so fast it could go. the only trimaran planing hull I have seen is Joe Doblers '30+ '
@tomaskryan6 ай бұрын
@@CanadianDivergent Well. You know much more than I do. What you say here makes a lot of sense. The center hull of the f27 looks a lot like a regular sailboat hull. My max speed with this boat is 17 knots, no waves, no current. That is higher than a 27 ft displacement hull (about 7 kts?), but probably much lower than a true planing hull with the same forward force. So yeah, something in between makes sense. Thanks!

Tomas, great photography. That was interesting when you were nosed up to the steep wall of rock. Does anyone put a lag bolt into the sheer wall and anchor to that with a bridal? Don't know how you would have enough rope to drop an anchor to keep the boat off of the cliff. Certainly wouldn't want to lose an anchor in super deep water and all that line. Any ideas on how to do that in calm conditions?
@tomaskryan7 ай бұрын
Yeah. I think the easiest would be to use rock climbing protection such as a cam into a crack as an anchor to the wall. Agree, it’s too deep for dropping an anchor, and it would probably not find a place to grab, I think it is all big rocks down there. Thanks!

@tomaskryan8 ай бұрын
The bed board is attached to the l-tracks on its four corners with little slider with a clip. Lift the clip and it glides up or down the track. Do that at each corner. Easy.

I'm just discovering the option of adding a bowsprit to my F27. I've just moved from Treasure Isle Marina in SF Bay where the winds are typically 20-30 knots regularly. I've achieved sustained 21kts as my best record (flat water and good strong wind and good rail meat). Around he new marina looks like wind speeds around 2-12 kts so I am looking for increased sail area that can be single-handed. I'm hoping to find tips/vendors on adding a bowsprit. TIA
@tomaskryan11 ай бұрын
Nice! That is fast! I would look into an on deck retractable bowsprit. Once you have that the rest is pretty straight forward as you see on my video. Definitely get a furler.

I do not know. I use the Marine Traffic app on my ihone but you need a network connection. Otherwise you need satellite com or your boat and AIS receiver. I do have a marine VHF radio with AIS receiver. Works pretty good.
