I also notice the air supply to the pipes has a tremulant on the left side. Periodically it rapidly moves, causing a tremolo effect, for example at 6:27. However I think it might be tubed to the wrong hole as it is used very infrequently and at strange places, sometimes even when the pipes are not even playing. Perhaps the Popper scale doesn't have provisions for a tremulant?
@Belgologies2 ай бұрын
You're totally right ; there is a tremulant box connected to one of the firsts holes. But I'm pretty sure it's not a fair connection as you mentionned. I'll have to check it with more explicit rolls, and comparing to the Reblitz book scales I don't have yet...

I see the piano has the dealer tag "A. Geyzen" Geyzen was one of the Belgian dealers for Kuhl and Klatt instruments in Brussels!

Yes indeed ! Geyzen was later the property of Balthasar-Florence, well known for his art harmoniums :)

I used to play this piece on my pianola. Whereas this was played straight through without expression, I used to use the pedals to achieve accent points and the levers to control variations in tempo, pauses and the like. Pianolas have much more ability to achieve expression than this video would suggest. Sadly my pianola is in need of repair, so I cannot use it these days.
@Belgologies6 ай бұрын
You're right ; with the time I'm learning to play with more nuances and variations. But the roll (state and arrangement quality) makes a lot :)

People belittle and denigrate the player piano as something *uncultured* If you were alive in some tiny village anywhere in the world and one of these turned up, it'd be like suddenly a rocket ship appears. Get culture anyway you can! ❤

Thanks for this informative video. I just bought 100 years old pump reed organ (Chicago Cottage) and I wondered about this device. Unfortunately I can not hear difference with or without (just the hiss of leaking air) ... but here in the video it is there.
@Belgologies8 ай бұрын
You’re totally right : the vox humana needs à great amount of air, that is leaked and not kept inside the instrument. If the air system is quite good, the vox humana is a nice device. If not the vox humana makes no notable difference...

@Belgologies5 ай бұрын

Moszkowski's music is underrated and rarely played nowadays. I have pumped through these rolls from the 1st Orchestral Suite on a piano similar to yours, a Stroud 88/65 Pianola. This theme and variations sound nice on an Orchestrelle, too. Unfortunately, very few people play classical music on the player piano. I've had 60 years enjoyment doing so! Keep up the good work! PS - Try the Moszkowski piano concerto Op. 59 ----- great music on Universal and Mel-O-Dee rolls.

Thank you so much for uploading this. When our family pianola stopped working 35-odd years ago, I never thought I'd hear this roll again. Dear Patrick, in fact I spent more than 8 months on this pianola, that was completely mute. I read many books to understand its mecanics, especially 'Player piano servicing and rebuilding' by Reblitz. But there is no manual, and there are several differences between manufacturers. But with time and logic you will have success !
