Thanks, very insightful video. Just to be clear… the ignition coil always has power on both side terminals + and - even when the ignition switch is off?

I bought a 1930 Ford Model A last month for $3500. It's more or less a blank canvas since its really just a frame without a body (aside from the cowl off of a 1926 Ford Model T roadster pickup which is sitting on there). As far as I know, the frame has been refurbished and the engine has been rebuilt. The steering column on the car does not have a wheel on it but I did get a spare Gemmer column with it, as well as two full sets of fenders, a gas tank off a model T, a mismatched pair of rear bumpers, half of a front bumper, a set of splash aprons, four brackets for mounting running boards, some headlights, and a few other miscellanious items. I've been working on that Gemmer steering column, trying to remove the wheel so I can really free up the throttle lever. The spark advance lever moves good enough but I think the inside is full of gunk and rust and stuff, which is why I'm trying to get it apart. I'll try this method and report my results.

The fault lies in our schools that have drop' t industrial art and shop training. Even if a youngster has an aptitude for mechanics, he will never be introduced too it at a young age. They don't know the name for tools. What a shame.

You forgot the very important two oil spots on the generator and two spots on the distributor- these need to be done every 100 miles or so ( get an lubrication chart - very helpful) also lube the water pump.

Sorry to hear about Mr. Jack passing. Being from Louisiana, I felt at ease with talking to him about the problems I had with my A. Being a motorcycle master tech myself, he knew his years of automobile endeavours wasn’t falling on deaf ears. I read a book years ago about where he grew up not far from where I am in Louisiana, it told about his working in the family store and eventually going to college. And accepting a job with one of the big 3 if my memory serves. My A is body off right now. Who am I going to call to get it back together correctly? I will remember your kindness with great humbleness. RIP

Your videos are very good on the model a ford, I had a problem with my model a yesterday, I started it and it started back firing through the carburetor, it has never done this before, what do you think might be the cause, I ordered a set of points and condenser, my car always starts and runs fine, it is a 1931 TUDOR, great video, THANKS for sharing your knowledge on these Model A FORD'S.

Thanks for this information. I put my A into 3rd gear and rocked it by myself. No clang. The starter still wouldn't turn over. I wanted to pull the starter off to look at it. After removing the 3 bolts, I couldn't pull it away. So with one bolt put in about half way, I rocked the car again. This time, the starter freed up and pushed out as far as the bolt would let it.

Going to give this tip a try out for my 1925 Model T Runabout which I am trying to remove the old spider at the steering column. Had to go find a new puller as you showed though, since I had long since gotten rid of the one that I previously had. Hoping this trick works well, as it sure looks like it might. Thanks for sharing.

terrific advice! I love the simplicity of these machines! Yet, I am ignorant about the Ford Model A. Educate me, please. Is there any way in the modern world to help reduce the transmission from leaking as much as they often do? For example if the transmission was refurbished with new gaskets, seals, etc., are there better seals or some other ways to help keep lubricant inside the trans where it belongs without so much leaking out, similar to what you were referring to with the new ways to install better seals for the steering gear? Are modern lubricants, such as synthetic gear lube that can cover a wide range of weights for the differential, considered harmful? Why? In the same manner why would the differential leak so much? Any modern way to stop the seals or gasket from leaking?--I would think there would be especially with all the smart experienced men maintaining these machines. Same thing with the king pins etc. I have a 53 year old garden tractor and I use modern seals on the trans and the differential and the front steering bearings, etc., and boy do they make a difference. In fact, I understand that the rear gears on my tractor come from the Ford Model A. (1969 Cub Cadet). My goal, eventually, is to get a Model A with some patina, but in excellent mechanic condition, and drive it regularly.

I'm 32 and I want to track down my Great-Grandfather's 1930 Model A. He got it at the age of 48 and when ever he slowed down, he'd always say "whooooa slow down there..." like he was talking to his horse. The family held onto his car until 2005. I had no ability at the time to stop it from happening but I'd like to get it back one day of I can track it down. Either way, this channel has been amazing and incredibly informative.
