Did you hit sandbars in 2 feet of water on this river? Iowa's West Nishnabotna is brutal at only 2 feet.

Try the RaceFace Ride pedals bro. All plastic, no pis to mess with. Not quite as much grip but if you're not doing anything aggressive, they are fine.

When i was a kid my family camped at Hickory Ridge every summer w a group of many other friends. (late 70/ early 80's) and other campers Its changed SO much. Once had property owners lived on site w their little girl i played w all the time nice double wide huge weeping willow we could swing from, also a small store/camp check in, as well as swimming pool my dad and others helped build. Every year that was my summer. Many Trails i see are no longer there nor the campsites used to have maybe 40 or so. Before Hickory Ridge we went to Roberts Creek :) I grew up outside fun times still outside now. Cannot stand being indoors all day no way!

I know it's been a while since you put out this vid so I'm wondering, do you still have this bike? The question I have about concerns the brakes. I'm thinking your bike comes stock with mechanical disc brakes rather than hydros. Did you keep the brakes as they were or did you upgrade? If you kept the mechanicals, how were they, did they work well enough? Thanks. I hope all is well.

I never had a problem with the stock brakes. I did have to adjust them at the start of each season but after that they were good to go. I ended up trading the bike for a surly karate monkey because the journeyman always felt small to me even with the largest frame available (I’m 6’5”). The only thing I ever disliked on the bike were the spikes in the stock wheels, they broke often and I haven’t had that problem on my other bikes ridden under similar circumstances. All my current bikes run hydraulic brakes and honestly, I sometimes miss the simplicity of Salsas mechanical brakes.

NE Iowa is something else, a beautiful section of un-glaciated geography. The Yellow River is also very pretty, but not quite as spectacular as what you just saw. Try the Buffalo River in northern Arkansas, which is similar, but even larger. Missouri has some great water for tall bluffs, the Current River comes to mind, as well as a tributary of the Current River, which I'll not name (ya gotta work for that jewel). Of course, the Mighty Mississippi and the Muddy Missouri have lots f bluffs, even as high as the Buffalo River. Thank you for posting this very nice video, IHPB! One more recommendation for a river having a LOT of springs: Missouri's Eleven Point.

Just came across your videos! You barely scratched the surface...there is so much more than the canyon! We lived in Galena about 10 years ago and I used to get away to Mines of Spain multiple times a week if I could! I did A LOT of grieving and soul searching there so this place holds a special place in my heart! ❤

I’ve rented kayaks at Big Creek before but I own one now. Do you know if the kayak launch at the marina is open to the public or is it just for the rentals?

This was a good kayak paddle on the mississippi river man. You had nice weather & all. I really like your sandals you was wearing do you know what kind of sandals they are? I would like to get me a pair for kayaking too. I have to kayak barefooted 👣 because I have big very very Extremely wide feet 🦶 with very chubby fat wide toes that are Evenly straight across making my foot very very Extremely wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. My foot outgrow shoes , socks , & boots when I was 18 years old & Flip flops 🩴 is the only footwear that will barely and I mean barely fit on my feet 🦶 because my toes are wider than the flip flops 🩴 straps. I like your sandals because my toes would be able to be wide open & the strap would sit behind my toes. I am looking for a sandals to wear for kayaking & those look very nice. I would appreciate help & information sir. Happy Thanksgiving to you & your family.

The silting up of the lake created by the dam in the park is an example of poor watershed control and this dam should be considered for removal and/or redesign. I grew up in this area of Iowa.

I know you posted a year ago. Some quick questions. Are you still happy with the Salsa bike? Changes? Why the Journeyman over the Fargo? Also, if you are doing the Ragbrai, any ideas on the alternate (parallel) routes? They are predicting a huge turnout. Enjoy your videos!

Looks like fun-winter camping. I had cousins in nearby Red Oak and we'd visit them in the winter and they don't always have a lot of snow. The hiking in the snow looks fun. The cabins were rather nice and cozy. Thanks for sharing this.

How have I not found this video yet. Awesome documentation of the park! I've been to all 54 of Iowa's state parks and this is my favorite one, so I love to see it being appreciated. Not sure when I'll make it back there. I don't plan on being in Iowa for much more of my life (I'm working on moving to Sioux Falls).

My first RAGBRAI was 1990. No social media, or cell phones. Stood in line to pee, poop, eat, shower, phone home, purchase, ride. Last 3 days were rain. Met no corn bears in corn fields. Something about kaibows? Left @ 0500, ate an hour later, finished by 1 p.m., took lovely nap after tent set up & shower . And booked with the Chicago charter, they shuttled. I found my RAGBRAI shirt other day, when I’ll do it again , I’ll wear it, say hello.

Grew up about 40 miles from there and walked all the trails there when I was in Boy Scouts. Beautiful place in a quiet part of the world. Only one other place like it in the world and that's in China.
