This is probably one of those games the NHL and the refs should've pulled the plug on.

The North Stars of this era drafted great talent : Smith, Bauepre, Ciccerrelli, Hartsburg. They should have won at least 1 cup in the 80's, but there were 2 dynasties in the way...Islanders and Oilers. I never understood why they started making so many trades in the mid 80's instead of staying with a good young core of players.
@akapper573 күн бұрын
Lou Nanne was a good GM for the North Stars at the start. He did benefit from some young talent when the Cleveland Barons merged with them in 1978. But as you said, he started to overtrade, (just like Rangers GM Phil Esposito did), and it didn't work out so well.
@fredblassie95233 күн бұрын
@akapper57 right on. Imagine them staying the course and battling the oilers at that time. I know they had some success but they were never considered a real threat to the oilers or FLames of that era. They did regroup in 91 under Bob Gainey. Great run to the finals.

As a Caps fan, it's very sad to watch this game. This was essentially the height of a very good Caps mid 80's team (3rd year in a row they finished top 5 in the League - 2nd year in row at 3rd overall). After this year they started trending downward. They could never get it done in the playoffs - what might have been :(

I was also at this game. First row second section right behind the 7th Ave goal on the wall. Amazing how the Flyers got away with taking out Mio time and time again in the first period.

Did the announcer just pronounced Bob Sauve’s name “soo-ah-vay “? Lol

These announcers are…not good. I know it was the “old” days. But boy, the guy doing color commentary is absolutely awful. Obviously. Phil Esposito probably learned his shoddy color commentary skills from this guy.

I'm a big Rangers fan and grew up in Brooklyn. I was 7 and home for holiday break and was amped for Gartner's 600th. I went on a tour of MSG the next morning/afternoon and this game played over and over at MSG while we were in the building and eating in the restaurant.

Players didn't wear helmets, no advertisements on the boards or on the ice, no obnoxious loud music during play stoppages and the Garden hadn't been renovated for the 1st time.Jim Gordon with Bill Chadwick!The good old days indeed. Notice how small the numbers on the back of the Ranger jerseys was

Which members of this edition of the New York Rangers had won the Cup before donning the Blueshirt?
@user-fu3eo3dh5yАй бұрын
If we had held on to that 2-0 lead in game 2, we would’ve at least scored the overtime goal in game 4 and won game 6, 2-1 in overtime and the Cup, ending Montréal’s 3-Cup winning streak and then Montréal would’ve rioted. This would’ve made the Islanders the ONLY TEAM AT ALL, to win more than 3 consecutive Stanley Cups.

Moron homer announcers. I love these idiots saying he "bumped" Larmer. Maloney is lucky he didn't get worse. He initiated it all dumping Larmer.

As a lifelong Leafs' fan(I'm 62) I still recall the euphoria of beating the Islanders in '78. Unfortunately it did NOT lead to better things and the Leafs sunk quickly to the depths of the league. The Islanders,however,learned from losing here to the Rangers and ran off four successive Cup wins,something no team is likely to repeat. Big win for the Rangers though.

You can see how Marv was exactly on the play with his call. I believe the best radio hockey play by play announcer ever. And the "Big Whistle" doing color. Sal "Red Light" Messina must have been out sick that game.

I'm watching this after watching last night's Rangers playoff game vs Carolina. The 1978-1979 team can't hold a candle to the 2023-24 team. Also, the approach to goaltending is a different animal now as opposed to what it was back then

@@eblissreseller as an Islander fan of that era, I have to say Jim Gordon was class. Seemed like a guy always approachable and kind. I miss the announcers from the 70s and 80s. Such great memories of hockey in the real NHL.....not today's watered down, over expanded, robotic like sport. I miss the old Patrick division

Man the Rangers sure played some sloppy hockey back then. Extremely undisciplined, unorganized and they got flustered and choked so easily. It's unbelievable how much better they look today. It's like a trillion times different. Even the 94 team was light-years ahead of this early 80's franchise.
