Well, not every single Russian does that.If you go to listen to the people from the north of Russia, first, you will not understand anything (tested by a native), second, you'll find that their speech has some peculiar features, including окание, or pronouncing "o" in unstressed positions as "o" and not as "a".I'd highly recommend you watch "Сезон о диалектах" by "Подкаст Розенталя и Гильденстера", a series of podcasts about Russian dialects.

When I was studying Russian at university, the professor asked all of us our favorite colors, then told us the word. If I had known, I would not have said purple! Now, фиолетовый is as easy to say as мама!

Чувак, а как ты вообще выучил родной язык, будучи ребенком и не зная ни одного правила? Инглишмен прав, нахрен грамматику, если хочешь выучить язык, нужно слушать и запоминать. А если хочешь как в школе учить грамматику, то ты через 10 лет двух слов связать не сможешь

I haven't taken any lessons, but for the past few years I've been deconstructing Russian by listing to Russian music, mostly rap. I taught myself the alphabet. And I began noticing this about O. And the funny thing is, even though I can't explain why, I know can tell how it is pronounced in words almost 100% of the time. Even stranger is that I can pronounce a lot more words than I know. My vocabulary is extremely small, and I can't make many sentences. Only three or four. My way of studying Russian was more for fun than anything. Eventually someday I may get lessons. If tensions settle between our countries, I would really love to visit and be able to communicate.

What is the difference between батюшка and отец?
@decidens
@decidens 23 сағат бұрын
"батюшка" is father as in father from church (the priest) "отец" is a formal way to say father "папа" is a informal way to say father, closer to "dad" in English, you would normally call your dad "папа" and not "отец"

I've been learning russian for a few months now (I took a course in university), but we learned about "stressed" letters that had apostrophes above them in order to recognize when the "о" turns in to an "а". My teacher told us that Russian kids learn words with these apostrophes in their books when they are in school, but these apostrophes gets removed when the kids get older. Then you just need to remember how the words are pronounced and which letters are stressed. It would be helpful if you in your videos could put the apostrophes above the stressed letters for us beginners :)

Have been hammering the basics for a little under a month now. The thing that makes me stumble so much in pronunciation is the horrible lack of vowels. In my mother tongue, Finnish, most words are at least 50 % vowels. Trying to pronounce Russian feels like stumbling up a stairwell. Not giving up though. My goal is to be able to hold a basic conversation by the end of summer.
