When I was at the golden pavilion I got a matcha soft serve generously dusted with extra matcha powder and tiny flakes of gold leaf to be on theme lol but it was super delicious! And also, in osaka, I tried the cheese soft serve and it was salty and sweet, super delicious.

I think your take is normal. Growing up, there was definitely a stereotype that foreigners and young people would not like traditional Japanese food as much. Part of the way you get used to it is that the New Years food (Osechi) has a lot of dishes that have these more old school flavors and ingredients in them, and as a kid you don't like them as much, but you have to eat it all (or at least try them) to get your new years money. After your palate gets used to it, you learn to appreciate the different textures and flavors of old school Japanese food.

Um my all time favourite food is Pumpkin Katsu! Its in my top 10 favourite foods!!! I would eat that while I'm dying so it's the last thing I eat! But I hear nothing about it in Japan!
