This is a great video. I picked up the game outside of Australia having not played or been around it (besides tv) when there. Great to see an overview with examples that can be easily googled or players that can be studied. Also, great work on including AFLW content. I hope you have kept that up and do more of it.

The reason Victoria ended state of origin is they weren't dominant anymore that's why they waited till they won then end it there

Great video, one thing though you talk about the average crowd in WA being only 20k. The main reason for that is that Subiaco did not have lights for the majority of the 90s meaning that Origin was played at the much smaller WACA Ground. WA VS VIC would have gotten a much bigger crowd if it had of been played at Subiaco.

Most players no longer play in their own State. This is the reason why the AFL is so against playing Origin. SA VS VIC would highlight that the Crows and Power have almost no South Australians playing for them.

I believe that it probably has never be so easy for clubs to accept (in hindsight) a GF defeat by less than a goal. It was indeed a fair result, both teams where pretty equal overall. Of course swans fans can say “one point, we could have won 2006 as well”, but in the same vain, they could have lost 2005. Same goes for the Eagles the other way around. I believe the fact that both got their well deserved flag makes the rivalry so beautiful.

Pushing the cats out to the flanks to have their shots at goal was a key factor in them missing alot of them. They only managed to get through the cluster when we made mistakes moving the ball. That's how Mooney and Ottens had those simple shots that they missed which personified how the match turned out. If it wasn't for the brilliance of Ablett who was the only one able to regularly get his way through they may have lost by more.

Whilst I agree that the Father/Son rule is indeed unique and highly 'romantic', it is by far the most unequal advantage giver to any team. Genetics isn't fair (especially if you are a St Kilda supporter) and that some teams just keep seeming to get more and more talented players by essentially luck, it means teams that actually need them won't realistically have access to them. As far as I am concerned, it also forces (if the player so desires to play for them) a young player to carry extra weight of expectations on their shoulders. If they were drafted by another team, at a position that truly reflects their value/potential, that is far less likely to be the case.

What suck is that Saints could have won more but nooooo the richer clubs who had won several cups just had to interject Edit: what sucks is that ST KILDA my team basically got told that you won your first primership well we can’t have that and they screwed over by the clubs who got good zones complaining that no just let us stay here

I'm curious if there is a law about faulty equipment or not using equipment properly. The siren was used but not loud enough. This was unacceptable for a professional sporting organization.

Thank you for the video. I just got watch AFL and am binge-watching whichever games I can't get live. The "holding the ball" rule is even more confusing than the NFL's description of what "catch" is; fyi, I'm an American (not a Yank but a Southerner). Anyways, I appreciate the video. You fellas have the best football I've ever seen. And, sadly, you guys are also pulling off mullets better than a Southerners too. :-(

Amazingly, to this day I still feel the saints were robbed. Sure, freo did win in reality. However, an AFL match ends when the umpire blows his/her whistle, not when the timeclock was meant to signal the end of the game, not when the siren was supposed to sound and certainly not when the afl steps in and changes the rules... If the saints got the 2 points from that result they would have made the top 4 and could have maybe (******maybe*****) stolen a premiership. Frustrating how afl rules and rule changes effected the saints in 2006, 2010.

the rule should be void for the sake of the integrity of the afl in this kind of situation and hah, no way saints were beating sydney or west coast in the finals if they needed a daylight robbery to go their way to make top 4 thats just like saying ben keays "point" wasn't actually a goal against sydney because the goal umpire ruled it as a behind come on, its common sense, its actually shocking to see how much it lacks and if anything, freo would have been more likely to beat the eagles instead of the crows in the first qualifying final (as they would have been 4th and eagles were 1st) and the dockers beat the eagles twice that season, so if there was more a team that was likely to steal a premiership between the two, it was definitely fremantle

the stupid thing about the showdown is that Port Magpies never played the Crows, ever. The Crows are a compilation of all SANFL teams, port included. I think it makes sense for Port to wear it during a heritage round, but really the true showdown is Power vs. Crows. Power represents ports will at separating from the sanfl and being a bigger club.
