How does this compare to a fairchild?
@mr_bradsmith3 ай бұрын
Both are vari-mu compressors with similar feels. The Wunderlich feels a bit more grabby to me and harder to use subtly. If I were to just be comparing the compressor to say the UAD Fairchild, I would choose the UAD. But certainly the Wunderlich as an overall tone shaping box has a few more bells and whistles included.

Jim! Great to hear from you! Was worried I lost ya. Haven’t tried that Mystic yet. That’s the Tree Branch strip emulation isn’t it?
@jimslominski80064 ай бұрын
@@mr_bradsmith Yes that’s right, it’s a Tree Audio Branch emulation. I’ve only just recently picked it up and have been using it as a mojo vibe plugin. I’ve found myself going down the Acustica rabbit hole a bit, along with Nebula. I really like some of the Nebula stuff but the setup is a pain. I switched over to Reaper, which makes it easier, as there are a couple of tricks I use to lay the Nebula plugins out better. And, no, you didn’t lose me. I’ve been watching all your reviews and always love your them. I’m glad you remember me. Last year was a tough year. My son, who has a disability, ended up in the hospital for a while so we spent most of the year helping with his recovery. All is much better now. I’ve been keeping up on all the music stuff but staying a bit low key. I saw you took a bit of a hiatus yourself, so good to see you back again as well. I’ll make sure to chime in more often. Your vids really are some of the best - very honest road tests filled with solid real world knowledge. Cheers!

Grateful to be back making videos though as it is a nice creative outlet. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on any upcoming reviews!
@jimslominski80064 ай бұрын
@@mr_bradsmith Hey Brad, I'm glad to hear things are better on your end as well. I hope it wasn't overly serious. My best to you and your kin. I have to say that the last year really opened my eyes to the healing powers of music. Not in any mystical sense, but there is something buoyant and binding in listening to music, playing music, working with and being creatively engaged with it. This was true for our whole family, whether we were nostalgically holding onto our comfort bands or songs, or picking up a vinyl copy of The Muppets Christmas Carol soundtrack 🙂. Anyway, it did seem to help keep us afloat in some way. I did get a chance to try out Wunderlich last night and this morning, and A/B it against Mystic. It wasn't extensive. I just applied it on a vocal track. My initial impression is they are very much the same, or at least seem to have similar intentions and applications. I'm not even sure I can definitively say which I like best. There are elements of both I like more in one than the other, but not drastically. In general, my impression with Mystic is it's a bit more 3-D and a little brighter edged. But Wunderlich has a bit more grit and more of that mojo flavour. Definitely the drive in Wunderlich has that pleasant distortion, that you can ratchet down to taste. I wasn't able to get Mystic to break up in that same way. There's also an obvious difference in the compressors. The Mu is definitely gooey-er and some nice weight, a bit sporadic though, depending on the speed applied. The Mystic has more of an opto flavour, which is also really pleasant. Hard to describe the real difference. Maybe I can say the Mu is a bit darker and girthier, and the opto rides things a bit more and has sheen. But I'm not sure if those are accurate descriptions. In terms of the "Travel" filter on Wunderlich versus Mystic, I think I liked the Mystic filter a bit better. The high cut on Mystic sounds to me like it darkens gradually and musically, whereas the Wunderlich feels a bit all-or-nothing and it just kind of dampens the high end too drastically. As for the Mix knobs, I believe Wunderlich's is slightly more effective and easier to dial in a sweet spot. I'm not sure the Mystic Mix knob does much actually - the GUI is a little janky and the range feels too tight. I have other Acustica stuff, like El Rey 2, where the Mix knob is really, really effective and sounds great, and you can really dial a good parallel compression into it. Overall, for mojo, I'm leaning towards Wunderlich, but there is something nice that happens with Mystic as well. It's a toss up. Looking forward to your next one.

Good to see you back sir! I watched your review on the sidecar too. I have to say, this was an instant buy for me after seeing MDN's video. But your supplemental video was very informative as well. To that: I loved the UAD comparison here! I almost bought it, but I compared a demo against Lindell's API which I have... and it was so close that I held off. My purchase of the Sidecar has redeemed me. 😊 This was a thoughtful comparison. Yes. Both this and the P455 are a wonder to have. Thanks again ✌

@@mr_bradsmith Indeed. The P450/55’s are special. Especially, the depth :) It must’ve been exciting to be a tester! The converters were just a brilliant idea. Although, MDN doesn’t specify for the P455, there’s a comparison video of his five favorites. Based on that, I have a sneaking suspicion the two offered may be: Willie > Burl B2? Atticus > JCF Audio? 🤷🏻♂️ RE: Lindell vs UAP. I feel they are both API spank-tastic. I like the FET/VCA and 3 EQ options in the Lindell especially :)

Great video! I just got into SSL and have the Channel Strip 2, the Bus Compressor, and the X-saturator; and am now looking to complete the bundle as it were-- with the other plugins. But looking at channel strips, would you recommend also getting the 4K B and the newest 4K E, because they are significant investments price-wise, given that I'm super impressed by and satisfied with the Channel Strip 2 (which is a 9000K)?

Thank you! I'm glad you dig it! I think if you're happy with the CS2, I would just stick with that. It's great. Especially since they've added the HQ option. The only thing it's missing is saturation, but you have the X-Saturator. I would maybe look to add some other tools that would round out rig.

I've tried to like this thing. It would solve so many problems! But.... Sorry, the rider should be called a breath amplifier. It's terrible. The compression is just too much for me as well. The reverb seems tinny and harsh to me. Maybe it's just the vocals or genre - simply put: I just don't like anything it does, ha ha ! Lie and learn...

I wanted to love this thing too, but the compressor is over the top for me. Unless you are working on some super modern pushed pop, which I did find it worked well there or at least translated really well. Particularly on small speakers. But not appropriate for anything else. Definitely specific to Louis Bell's workflow and production style.

45:21 My mistake for not clarifying this point and will be adding it in the next user guide update. The 2-bus compressor's listen channel is always active and fed directly with the unprocessed input signal. The compressor's internal sidechain is made up of a series of custom ear-tuned emphasis and de-emphasis curves. Parameter changes within P455 (outside the compressor module) will not affect the behavior of the compressor (since it is listening to the input signal). This design choice allows for shaping the audio, character, image and color, without affecting the gain reduction on the signal.
@mr_bradsmith5 ай бұрын
Ah! Thank you for clarifying. As I said, initially this threw me, but I have really come to prefer it operating this way for the reasons you've mentioned. It's great to be able to keep the compressor dialled in and shape and mold with all of the other options.
