Got about 20 or so minutes into your review-I was expecting a break down of the different expansions and more of a buyers guide-but you just kept talking about how you would want to play a game. I was really looking for more objective criteria or thoughtful comparisons-but it felt like a lot of you grousing about this or that. I’m sure people who know you care, I don’t know you, and don’t really care what you like. Hoping that in your future videos you take more of an overview and less of a personal view (which is only truly useful to those who know you). Best of luck to you, but I won’t be watching.

I’ve no idea what your favourite deck builder is, but I know it’s not the best deck builder of all time time because you got put off by the version which is probably the weakest one, and certainly not one for people new to the game - and that is of course Aeon’s End!

Of all of the games I’ve been completely underwhelmed by, this is the one that stands out as one I need to give another try. Especially as this edition adds the player board which is really needed. Until then, my favourite auction game is a toss-up between Modern Art and High Society.

I love Ark Nova. Like TM it is the reactionary and quick think on your feet style that draws me to many games. Although I do enjoy strategic and well planned out games sometimes I want to play a game that thrusts me into tough spots and makes me rethink my whole game plan. I’m not a fan of META gaming, and although it’s obvious that reptiles and birds are easy play strats that are more consistent they are generally one you adopt alongside a plan with a bigger pay off. On top off that more cards is more replay-ability for me, the same reason I love games like TM, Everdell and Dog Walk the amount of cards involved means there is never one overpowered combo that everyone is playing for because if you wait for that one big play you know can win the game never comes up, you probably finished dead last.

I disagree about not playing this game with randoms. I play this on BGA frequently, some rounds are better than others. It just means you have to talk more in between rounds about goals. I recently played a game with a person from Portugal and we had one of the most amazing rounds I have ever played.

Great article and research. Loved the work. But sorry, when you said "not to put words in his mouth" and proceeding to paint a villain was very unprofessional. Especially since you were equating horrible conduct of another person from a different country to Davidoff... Any roleplaying game can become horrible if led by horrible people, but we're not damning Gygax for it. As a gamedev, I can evaluate, with your good research, that Mafia was invented not as a game, but as a teaching tool, which means you need a well instructed teacher to lead it. And there are no instructions except what you found in a Davidoff's interview, that he leads players to be honest. That's nowhere near an accredited teaching tool to be used for more sensitive aged children... It grew up as a folk game, and I played it as a folk game a lot. Its history is really fascinating, thanks!

I was listening to this, and when I heard you say "Zorp" I googled it and there actually is a game called that. There is a whole other story here about how mainfame based text adventures were an attempt to adapt Dungeons and Dragons. Most of the earliest Apple ][ CRPGs, from famous ones like Ultima and it's predecessor Akalabeth, and more obscure ones like Robert C. Clardy's excellent Dungeon Campaign, Wilderness Campaign and Odyssey: The Compleat Adventure were all attempts to stimulate D&D on a computer. Both Garrott and Clardy were D&D fans.

@@NoPunIncludedah too bad, yours was by far the best review of Continent and I was looking forward to a follow up. In fact I've found that in general there really isn't the same level of enthusiasm for Citadel, even though it fixes many of the problems with Continent. But you're right about having to play through the intro scenario every time. That's a slog. They're addressing it somewhat by adding new variety to the intro scenario in the forthcoming expansion but that doesn't fix the problem. The intro does not take 5 hours one you've successfully completed it. More like 2. But still, 2 too many, I definitely get it. I've just completed the intro scenario and found the epilogue compelling enough that I'm home, at least for now.

I have sometimes found with people who actively have had a bad experience in a social deduction game, including BotC, that it's the specific bad social behavior of gaslighting that ruins a game for them. Emphasize on sometimes because some people are just allergic to being lied to in general which is understandable. Hence why my group, and I believe the botc discord as well though the wording might be different, have a unique rule for it: If a player believes that the only way out of being caught in a lie is pretending like they didn't say something to a specific player or small group of other players, they privately inform the other that they'll deny that conversation happened the way it did and, importantly, will keep the denial simple and *will not invent a different story about it.* This serves the purpose of not engaging in behavior otherwise deployed by abusers. Also the other player has the opportunity to ask for that to not happen and instead reach a concord of mutually keeping quiet about it instead- which is my preferred option. Or in other words: it's lying with consent freely given.

The tension of the clock running down and the end of the era is coming close. People start bidding on nonsense just so they don't go the whole round and get nothing. And then, other rounds when there is plenty of time on the clock and there is only one person left, who can let the track fill up as much as they want. And don't forget the push your luck, when you are the last player, but the next RA tile ends the round immediately...do you push for one more free tile, risking losing it all?

Love the desicions and risk/reward Maquis presents you with. An interesting one is Hostage Negotiator and Final Girl. You decide what you want to do and then roll if it's a success, great success or catastrophic failure. So the luck comes after the decision, which is often bad, but in these games imo creates an unbelievable level of stress that fits the theme (escaping from a killer) quite well if you're into that. And there's many rolls, so you can try to switch tactics if need be.

It’s been a revelation to discover this classic via this new version. Ian O’Toole’s graphic design is so intuitive, that when we were teaching a new player the other week, that new player caught that we were scoring the Monuments wrong simply by the graphics displayed on the player boards. (We had been scoring monuments each round and not the final round only.)
