I consider a lot of this cheating. I call these points into contention: - multiple spoons. Should he be only allowed one? -microwave skip. All hot contents were heated previous to timing. -contents are not necessarily required to be applied separately. Why not mix them all and just throw them into a tortilla together. You would only need one spoon this way. -besides these points, would it be considered cheating to mix the sour cream with the meat and veggies? What constitutes "cheating" in a burrito Speedrun? Upon consideration, I realize I am contemplating the rules to a burrito Speedrun and am now going to make one myself.

Okay, upon returning for my third watch of this I decided to post this. I know, pedantic "um, actually" stuff, but it's the kind of stuff I'd like learning about, so I'll share. The DAS (Delayed Auto-Shift) in NES Tetris was explained partially incorrectly. It's a little bit more complicated. I'll ignore all other versions of the game and talk exclusively about NES Tetris NTSC here. When a piece is falling and there is no input, pressing and holding down a direction will, firstly, move the piece one square in the direction pressed immediately; then, there is a 16 frame delay; after that, DAS kicks in: the piece moves one more square, a 6 frame timer starts, and at the end of it, it repeats that. So, normally, the delay per-distance works out to: 0, 16, 22, 28, 34, 40. However, there's a bit of a buggy interaction with three aspects of how DAS works here. -First, the frame counter for both delays are stored in the same memory address, it's just reset to different values depending on whether it's being set by a button press or by DAS itself: when you press it, it moves the piece and sets the counter to 16, then it starts counting down; once it reaches 0 the piece is moved again, and the counter set to 6. -Secondly, the DAS frame counter is decreased and checked if it's 0, in which case a piece movement is attempted, for every frame the button is held down, and once you release the button, the counter is left as is. The game expects this value to be reset whenever DAS is next used, and does no attempt at cleaning up the memory it just stopped using. -Lastly, the counter is only set to 16 if your button press actually moves the piece, meaning if you press a direction in between the frame in which one falling piece is locked and the frame in which the next piece is first rendered, the counting down part of the routine is started, but at whatever value it was last set to by the previous instance of DAS. The upshot is, if you let go of a direction at a moment when the frame counter is at a particular value, and you press and hold a direction just before the next piece is first rendered on screen, dodging the DAS "initialization", you get to skip the 16 frame delay. The resulting delays per-distance, with (t) standing for the value of the counter when you released the button, are: (t), (t + 6), (t + 12), and so on. Although this is hard to explain, and requires understanding the game code's logic, it is fairly easy to execute and get a feel for. Players who were at a high level during the DAS golden era would pretty much always do this, for every single piece of a game, with exceptions cases where little movement was needed, of course, and it since failing to do this increases the time it takes for a piece to move 2 or more squares by 4 to 11 frames, it can sometimes make a necessary move impossible with DAS alone, or at the very least, throw a player off into making a mistake. Just wanted to write this essay because this game is very dear to me, and as a good old DAS'er, I find the finer aspects of this mechanic to be among the most interesting and satisfying aspects of NES Tetris, and is most of the reason why it's still my version of choice.

I (and many other gen xers) can confirm that speed runs of these games have been happening since almost immediately after they were released. They weren't called speed runs obviously; there were just some kids who could beat these games in what seemed like a crazy fast time. Every young generation thinks that they were the first to do anything.
