Hi Carl, hope you and the family are good. Hope the gigs are going well. How are you finding this antenna. May have a new radio coming so will need a new antenna and thinking of one of these . If your gargen was 8x9m mid terrace would you use a covweb or DX commander? 73

I bought a MkIIg new in 2005 and used it to make 30,000+ contacts while deployed to Iraq. After returning, the radio was traded for an amplifier and I regretted it for years. A friend had one for sale a few years ago and I bought it for $200 in fine working condition. It is part of my 'go-kit' now and will not be going anywhere again! As for the QRP and amp comment, I have an Icom 705 for the D-Star capability and still paid less to add an amp than the cost of an IC-7100.

Drove my Discovery 98 from Cornwall to Bournemouth, ferry to Roskoff, then drove to Denia, costa blanca, ferry across to here Ibiza, what an adventure. Just me and my border collie. Had to get my dog here somehow. My old chugg never let me down once. Bought it for £1200 off a bloke near Plymouth. Best buy I did. Flown through two MOTs with no ads. Now fitting a CB but im useless at wiring so thinking of getting a rig that plugs in to the fag lighter.. would rather have the hard wire though. 😊

Hi Carl I know this is an old video but I have heard that the Military VHF radios have a much wider bandwidth signal than ham gear and that ham gear will not 'excite' military radios well. Do you find this to be so? I'm a subscriber and I love your channel. Many thanks from Texas. Robert K5TPC

LOL I did the opposite of what you said. I wanted as much confusion as possible in Ukraine....why you ask? Because as an American I 100% know for a fact that we instigated this war for the last 30 fucking years. If there is anyone to blame or be mad at it's us. It's a fucking disgrace how evil this god damned country has become all because of the ignorance and malice of the "elected" (selective) officials. The US has not been a free democratic republic since Reconstruction. I just wish I had figured this out before I joined the Army because I gobbled down all the propaganda after 9/11. Fuck Ukraine and the Nazis Victoria Newland installed.

Allow me to fill in the blanks…. The constant beeping means that the radio is in “clear channel mode” and not encrypted. The other operator was taking about the NATO CTCSS tone that is under the modulation. The dual antenna package is actually from a land to air radio that is obviously on 4m and 2m, the DP I’m led to believe does not mean Dutch police! It actually means Diplomatic Protection and also used by the Dutch Police. The programmer (known as a handbag programmer) and fillgun NOT gun fill (just a field programmer with preset channels and encryption algorithms). The radio is 1.8w into the SMT. I have about 10 of these and getting quite good at repairing them too. BTW the 4m antenna isn’t anywhere near 4m….. it’s much lower down at around 60mhz and will also account for poor transmission

I just purchased one used last week. Had to send off my IC-7300 for repair after a rainstorm took it out. Had to use the 705 for backup on ssb and data. Decided on getting a 706 for a backup/portable go kit radio. Once I get it here at the QTH, I plan on running it for a while and getting the TX Audio set up. Then, get an external sound card for data.

I am just setting up my MMX Triband Transceiver. I haven't had much luck yet on 40 and 20 meters, as there seems to be a great deal of traffic/interference on those bands. I can hear the CQ call clearly on some frequencies, but the rig is not decoding accurately. I see line after line after line of gibberish, and then a line or two of something correctly decoded, and then back to gibberish.

I Just completed my FCC EXTRA recently, as a begineer, bought a FT-991A etc. Dont understand the flat spot..probably responsibilities with work, family, lack of sleep..So Not to worry GO FOR A MID JOG Pump 02 into the lungs & brains. it'll pass, just give extra space to do other stuff, I went into Action Figure remodelling. CHILL out some, absence makes the ❤ grow fonder, enjoy the gigs, Cheers & Beers. 9V1KM KK7QGL Singapore Il DX sometime in the near future🎉😊🎉

Love the Motorola lowband kit 20kc spacing stuff Unfortunately it's USA only band 29.7-36.00mhz , obviously converted to 10m FM uses. Pair of those on Simplex should go far on VHF lowband FM-Mid. Loved the video 👍

I think a lot of people who first get into Amateur Radio buy the 817 dreaming of taking it for outdoor activation. However, most of us rarely ever do. So we just have other radio to use at home so sells it. Then as years go by, we miss the little guy, and then we come to realization that we really don't need fancy radios with all the bells and whistles to have fun with spontaneous activations. This is where the 817ND comes in. It does all for most situations. It even does 2m/440 and works well as a general receiver. Now here's the best part. Forget about SSB and CW narrow band mechanical filter. Just add the BHI DSP and you'll see this radio come alive. Not kidding, I will never get rid my little radio that can.

Carl, my interest in radio seems to wax and wane as well. I just go with it; I have other hobbies that fill the void whenever radio loses its luster for a bit. I enjoy your channel and watching your adventures, but please don’t make videos out of some feeling of obligation. I’ll tune in whether you make one per day or one per year! 73! Jim KE8WC

Those Motorola Saber radios were very popular with armatures here in the states about 10 years ago. Most of the authorities police, fire, EMS were starting there switch to digital and the used market was flooded with these things. And some of the higher models like the Astro Saber still demanded a pretty good price . Around $500 US. There still out there, but not as easy to find. But still a great preforming radio and way better than 99% of the stuff you can buy today... Batteries are getting to almost unobtainum status as I know of only one manufacturer still producing them at least here in the states. W&W Battery..... And there located somewhere in Florida. They manufacture all kind of hard to find batteries. Just in case your interested.

Good to see you back Carl.. I was starting to get a bit worried about you, and was going to contact the DX Commander to see if you were ok! Nothing wrong with putting radio on the side burner for a while and turning your interests elsewhere. We all need a break even with the best things in our lives. Playing music and doing gigs is a most excellent way of using ones time and talent productively. As for the channel... Do what you want, as you said “ It’s my channel”. Camping, Cooking, Music, Radio I like them all! So whatever you decide to do will be perfectly fine by me.

Great to see a new video from you - just a few days ago I'd wondered if I'd been unsubscribed from your channel because you'd gone quiet, so I came and had a look, and saw you hadn't uploaded anything in a while. As others have said though, you should feel no pressure to record or upload anything whatsoever mate. Just live your life, and if YOU want to share something then please yourself. Anyone that wants to watch it will watch it, and anyone that wants to moan will moan! All the best :) M7TYN

After passing my full licence I didn't touch a radio for about two months, it was a long range QSO with my twin brother in Canada that got me out of my funk, that and swapping out my antenna for a half sized G5RV which changed my DX options. A new rig is usually not the answer; this is a modern dilemma wherein more focus is placed on consumption rather than experimentation. In the early days of amateur radio they didn't have the luxury of eBay etc, if you couldn't build it yourself then you missed out. Personally I am planning on spending more time on homebrewing in 2024/2025. Keep up the excellent content when you can Carl! 73 DE M0KKZ
