the looses of history we have seen due to something being scrapped at the allure of metal prices and to the excuse of something being "too expensive" to sit around its such a shame that the deep sea, of all places, has a better track record of preserving history than we do

0:19 bit of a historical oof here: The Olympic's own induction system was located in the last funnel. So the first funnel should have smoke coming out of it like the rest, and the last funnel shouldn't have any.
@boogts
@boogts Жыл бұрын
The induction system for providing air to the boilers was not in the aft funnel. There are ventilators behind the bridge and in other areas. They look like radiators vs. Cunards more dated looking round scoops. The aft funnel was far too much astern to provide air for boiler room 6. The intakes would have been hundreds of feet long.

I know this is a terribly sad moment to see, but these 2 arriving at the breakers yard fed alot of desperately hungry people and there families who needed the work during the great depression, they served the country during the war and continued to provide even when they were no longer any use as passenger liners anymore.

At least Queen Mary was lucky, but Mauretania and her rival, Olympic were not, they were literally broken up and mûrdërd, WHY, JUST FREAKING WHY, they should’ve been either been sunk, making RMS Olympic and her sisters aka Titanic and britannic even, Or they should’ve been turned into either a museum ships or floating hotels

Two legendary ships are in a row. One is White Star Line, other is Cunard Line. Both were magnificant and legendary ships of their time. Even though Olympic didn't get the same respect as her sister Titanic, but she was the only living ship looking similiar to Titanic and Britannic (with some livery differences). And Mauretania was looking like Lusitania, her sister ship. Same as Olympic, she had also differences from livery and some designs. Both of them were wasted for nothing.

I'm even more bothered by the fact that the fourth one was actually an induction pipe. If there's smoke coming out of that, something has gone very, very wrong.

I really wish they could have done something with Olympic like they did with the QM so we could still see her today. In 1935 her outer and inner hull were both in remarkable shape and age was so sturdy scrapping on her was actually more difficult than it had been on other ships her age according to the men who cut her up. Could you imagine being able to step onto, touch and maybe even spend a night in such a great liner, maybe the greatest depending on who you ask? It would be a dream come true.

the plans were definitely there, but WSL or anyone else since the world was in such a financial crisis still, and with the tensions of WW2 just on the horizon in 1938, nobody had the time or money or care for Olympic, and honestly even with such remarkable shape, she’d probably be falling apart by now like Nomadic (not very visible but since she is drydocked her structure is beginning to sag and fail slowly because of her sheer/camber and not being in water)
