Fred was acutely conscious of his looks: jug ears, high forehead, profile 'like a knife', what David Selznick called his 'terrible chin line.' Not to mention his concave chest and sticklike limbs. He came closer to letting daylight in on magic than in any other movie by donning a kilt, but you never saw him near a swimming pool or relaxing in the bath. He preferred to duke it out with Adolphe Menjou as Hollywood's best dressed man.

Actually, he appeared in a singlet when he was drafted into the army in his first film with Rita Hayworth, You'll Never Get Rich. Nothing could destroy the magic because he was quite possibly the most graceful man who ever lived. Combine that with the charm and absolute sincerity of his performances and you have something totally unique and inimitable, namely Fred Astaire.

The stiffly formal Irish jig dance, arms down by the sides and all emphasis on legs and feet, contributed to American tap dancing. The Scottish variant allowed raised but stationary arms, as parodied here. Hollywood's choreography liberated the body above the waist.

I've always loved Fred and Ginger. But - as a resident of Scotland - this piece of cultural cartoonism just jags so much I've never ever been able to watch it all the way through. This is the Scottish equivalent of blacking up. I'm almost tempted to forgive James Doohan - at least he made an effort.

Please try not to feel that way. I find this portrayal of Scotch culture beautiful and charming. All ethnic groups are lampooned somewhat or a lot from time to time. We must learn to laugh at ourselves, not take ourselves so seriously. This IMO is a beautiful number, and the Scottish people should be very proud.

They were too busy mocking them at Not Disney World. And then being casted as cows, peasants, monsters, and bears. Although, if they did go to Disney today, Dan would be able to stay at The Magic Kingdom to get himself a good drink. Particularly singing and dancing ones.
