I have never made more than $35,000 during my working years, averaging just $12,000 per year. from 1971 to 2006. Since 2018 I have paid off $28,000 in credit card debt, Purchased and paid off a New $37,700 Ford Edge and put $14,000 in savings. With a retirement income of just $40,000 per year. The government did not bail me out and should not be bailing out people that are going to make way more money than I did during my work years. One thing they could do is allow student loan debt to be dischargeable in Bankruptcy, then the borrower who really does not have the ability to pay have a fresh start. Of course the bankruptcy would be on their credit report for 10 years. The rest can just suck it up and pay their bills like the rest of us.

What gets me mad is that Biden is willing to forgive student loans for individuals making up to $125K/year. Why should Americans who make less than half that amount have to pay your loan? If you're making that kind of money, you should be able to pay your own loan.

This is entirely BS. First, student loan borrowers who are in a better position will have paid off or be paying off their loans. Forgiveness primarily benefits those who have been screwed by the education system, and society at large. Second, students freed of unwieldy debt become productive citizen who can now participate in society and make commerce go, and have something to look forward to. Those who do not have anything to look forward to will be minimally productive and contributory. To be sure, student loan forgiveness is a bandaid action. What needs to happen is that institutions that take student loans need to be regulated on how much they can charge and for what, period.

I worked on road construction crews in the summer and part time jobs in the winter to pay for my college education. I never borrowed a cent. I'm 71. I started hod tending for brick layers when I was 12 years old. I left a lot of blood on the hoe the first two or three weeks. The hot lime in the mortar and the rough surfaces on the bricks toughened my young hands quick. I learned to use my back while I was learning to use my mind. I don't understand this young generation that think I owe them an education. They can all kiss my a__.

To stop this pandering I suggest ALL student loans are forgiven, the students will be pleased and so will the Biden administration. These policies have consequences and as the borrowers of student loans can not be trusted with credit, they will be denied credit for life, no home or auto loans, no credit cards or credit of any kind. These people will be America's first truly cash only society. Problem solved.

My biggest issue with this notion is that it is only brought up during election season and used as an attempt to bribe me to vote for whichever candidate happens to be promising it in their campaign. I will not be used as a political pawn by letting my vote be bought. Of course I'd love to have those payments vanish from my expenses, but that's not how life works. I could have worked harder in highschool and earned better scholarships, or I could have worked a job while attending college to supplement the cost, and I could have chose to attend a cheaper university or use the community college for Gen ed classes. I choose to attend an expensive university and I choose a difficult major that wouldn't allow time to work a job. If I did it all over, I'd use the community college resources and go to a smaller university because I've never had an employer care or even comment on where my degrees from. They just care that I'm capable of the job and able to actually show up sober in the morning. The bar for workforce standards is so low having a heartbeat and a small bit of pride in your work is more important than the degree. I work with engineers who have no degree but worked their way up over their career to doing the job and earning the same salary. My degree gave me about a decade head start which accounting for 5 years of college, only got me $50k more over 5 years of working than had i not spent 120k on a degree and just started right out of highschool. So a net loss of $70k is the monetary value of my degree and 5 fewer years of work experience. No taxpayer owes me a damn thing for my choices, it's my responsibility. I hate politicians who promise money they have no power to give instead of winning people with the policy that will actually affect my life. Love this video, I'm definitely sharing it with my entitled friends

My college age niece describes how bitter many of her friends are because their parents never saved for their college education. The dynamic perspective should include fewer people able to attend college because their parents decided that it would be better funding with student loans. Better to sin and beg "forgiveness."

This is why the federal government should have limited the total loan repayments to like double to triple what was borrowed, of course not discharged by bankruptcy. Even a bank lending out that money would be making a profit and potential students would know they have at least a limited amount to pay back, more likely wouldn't be saddled with it until they retire (for the majority of them anyway).

The forgiveness has to be paid for. Nothing is free. The funds came from the US Treasury which is funded by our tax dollars. In other words our tax money is paying for these loans. Paying off these loans means people will take out more loans and not pay them off in hopes their loans will be forgiven. That means our taxes will be paying for more loans.

39% of 18 to 24 year old high school graduates go on to post secondary education which is optional yet the government wants everyone including blue collar workers, trades people and others to pay for their decisions to borrow. They could have joined the military and gotten the G.I. bill. Their parents could have enrolled them in a college prepayment plan. They could have taken advanced placement college classes while still in high school free and gotten college credits. There are high school students who took advantage of that and graduated early saving thousands of dollars or even simultaneously. They could graduate, defer college, work and save for a few years then go. They can attend state or community College, graduate with an associate degree then transfer to a four year university with advanced placement as a junior with two years of university credit. A large percentage of college leave or graduate never using the degrees or knowledge acquired from the course work of which they studied. Over 90% of university students surveyed admit to using A.I. programs to assist them in course assignments (cheating).

I was ripped off at the university I attended. It was a public university. I studied real stuff. I got very good grades mostly. But they effed around and some of these universities, who do that, are now finding out. I tried to get satisfaction many ways through proper channels and appealed on the basis of the public good, and included the Dept. of Education in my reports . . . but they had no provision for this type of QC. So for every dollar I was ripped off, the taxpayers were ripped off two or three dollars. Ah then interest on the loans galloped way ahead of inflation. It was a profit-making scheme, for contractors, employees of the institutions, and for lenders, including the government. It wasn't for the public good or the students' benefit. Lemon Laws should have applied.

For all you weirdos who defend student loan repayment just keep in mind that its not like the normal loans you think of. Normal loans, cars, houses, etc...most of them are simple interest loans. Theyre debts that in the event of catastrophe could be discharged. Say you end up with cancer and no longer have income and get huge medical debt? Well if things go sour enough you could declare bankruptcy. That'd be discharged. Even then you could restructure debt. That is NOT how student loans work. Got cancer? Oh well. You still owe. Compound interest turns these loans into monsters FAST. If you hit a rough patch in the economy just as you were coming out of university even with a USEFUL degree in STEM its totally plausible that your rate of income growth as you move up in your career will NOT catch up to the compound interest if you are late to the party by as little as a year or two just because THAT'S HOW COMPOUND INTEREST WORKS!!! Furthermore lets say you get cancer or something, lose that is engineering job and no longer have means to pay? No problem... you're just screwed. They won't discharge it in bankruptcy AND if you got married guess what? THEY CAN GARNISH YOUR SPOUSES WAGES!!! Yeah they can take money from someone who never signed up for these loans. If these were simple interest normal loans like any other, I'd be 100% on board with all the people against loan forgiveness. But as the guy who got cancer and lost his engineering job and couldn't discharge my loans during the bankruptcy...yeah I'm all for fixing it somehow because this is ridiculous BS.

@@toddroper7944 They are literally compounding. And I'm not wallowing. They were actually discharged about one of the only ways in which they can be. 100% permanent and total disability with the VA. So I'm not even advocating for myself, I'm advocating for everyone else being screwed over. These loans are fraudulent and predatory. They should be illegal. They are not normal loans at all. Took me over 20 years to realize how NOT normal they are as the consequences of the dense legal language triggered more and more problems. That fact that you think they're simple interest loans means you don't know hardly anything about these loans. Very few of the options are simple interest. They're almost ALL compounding.
