The thing that scares me about old Cummins is that the color of the smoke makes them look like they are going to run away at any second.

The fact that we are still amusing ourselves with air-fouling activities like this, shows me we still don't get it: our air, water and soil are getting completely polluted by our activities. And yet we persist! Of course, various car races, tractor pulls, demolition derbies, etc., etc., are far more polluting than seen in this video. Still, when will we realize that all non-necessary fossil fuel combustion has to stop!
@seanworkman431Күн бұрын
Tell that to a container ship that burns 14 tons of heavy fuel oil per hour, I have no idea how much fuel an aircraft carrier fleet burns in a day and America has eight of those stationed around the world. Without fossil fuels we are going back to the caves and I'll bet you won't survive a week without your modern conveniencances.

Nothing beats a 2 stroke. These big engines are built like small 2 stroke petrol engines with no valves in tge cylinder (s), crankcase pressure scavenging, individual reed valves to the crankcases, and transfer passages to the cylinder intake ports. Super simple, the way a diesel SHOULD be! Great engines! 😋
Hearing the engines firing up and running was always the best part of the airshows I used to go to.

@ErikVonderlieth5 күн бұрын
Yes, I have the same question, how are these engines cooled ??????......
@Jim-ku6ryКүн бұрын
The coolant is stored in an external tank and pumped into the engine block. In most of them you can see the tank at end of the engine.

Dravo Shipyard at Pittsburgh, PA used to install pairs of military surplus Fairbanks Morse 2,200 HP engines on their river boats that had dual over and under crankshafts with two opposing pistons per cylinder. They were of lower RPM with good efficiency for that purpose.

My Grandfather's ship was upgraded to a Fairbanks-Morse 3 or 4 banger. I never sailed on that ship but, my father did and, the only description I had about the engine was, the regular thumping/humming sound so, here I am, listening to what the ship engine room sounded like. Similar to the one @ 12:43 or @ 15:09. Thanks for sharing.

The inline 6-71 Detroit we had, had a stamped "Battle Mode" detent selection on the governor. The 6-71 came out of a old WW2 PT 109 patrol/attack boat of the US Navy. If you were under attack, you could slip the governor into the "Battle Mode" detent, and gain a extra 250-400 rpms over redline.
