i apprechiate what they did with Sokka here. He had a silly belief, got it knocked out of him, and rose to the occation by learning and growing from it. Nevermind the show being for kids, its a lesson most adults could do with revising on a bit.

Im not sure if you ever rewatched season 1 but on a rewatch youll want to punch yourself since its pretty obvious. You likely ignored a lot of things thinking it was just comedy shenanigans. Im pretty sure at any given point at least two of them are having shitty days. Also micheal goes out of his way to do little things that make them uncomfortable like forcing chidi to try new things for a whole say and trashing his lifes work. Tahani wouldnt be placed that low on the list if you ignore her motivations, eleanor is basically always under a microscope, etc.

Considering what happened to the last two companions Dodo seems to be tempting fate when it comes to names . It's great to have a full episode , I do like William Hartnell and it's still surprising to see Peter Purvis pre Blue Peter . The idea of a cold being fatal to people with no resistance is an early use of the idea - on the ARK containing all that's left of Earth it's easy to see the two points of view - revenge and elimination of the threat against allowing them to help . After all the planet they hope to colonise may have similar diseases . Hope you feel better now , I always enjoy your reactions to these .

The "Confess! Confesss!" Scene really reminds me of the Monty Python "Spanish Inquisition" sketch. Maybe the pythoners were inspired by this.

There's a church near my mom's house that's called "The Village Church. " I always think of this show when I drive by there. Hehe. And it does have a green roof. And the font looks very 1960's on the sign, so it would fit right in there in the real "village." I should also note that they filmed a Doctor Who episode in Portmerion in the mid 1970's. It was a historical story, so they used the older looking parts of the town. I'll say no more till you get to it, as I don't want to spoil anything.

Still a bit confused on the title though. Demon could mean either Michael of Glen, and Spy is obviously Bad Janet. Who are Tinker and Tailor? Am I missing something? Because the joke seems kind of.. incomplete.

It's based on a film called "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" It's just a play on that title. Star Trek: Voyager had "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy" for example. To play along though the Tailor could be Glenn since he helped make the suit?

What’s funny is you told Glenn to shut up in season 1, before Shawn made it a thing 😅 (he’s brilliantly played by one of the writers, who doesn’t consider himself an actor and didn’t want to play him at all, but was thankfully tricked into the role)

😂 At the end of the 4x01, I told a friend that Janet seemed 'off' - standing off to the side at the train station. I think I made a joke that it seemed that D'Arcy didn't realize she was on camera or something. Fortunately, I forgot about that by this episode, so I enjoyed the surprise that she had been Bad Janet since then, probably feeling out her role. Janet was already a bit overworked and irritated in this experiment before the switch, so I excused her being that way later. Besides, Brent was enough to drive any being crazy, even a Janet.

Jason was truly hitting 100% in this episode. From his reaction to Michael's true form, to his decision to trust both Glen and Michael, to his knowledge of coconut rum, to his realization about Bad Janet, everything was right in some way. Such a fun episode.

It was so amusing to hear you sing Jason's praises at the start when I knew what he would be doing in this one. He continues to improve even more than this, if you can believe it. Oh, and, um, Glenn just needs a lot of time to reform himself. He'll be fine.

Regarding Number 2 and Number 48 after we dropped them off in London, I always viewed it as them reflexively going back to their old habits. Almost like dropping a fish back in the river it will take a second then swim off on its usual life. Number 48 as a rebel at heart thumbing his way along the highway. Number 2 attracted to power like a moth to the flame, sliding right back into the halls of power. Number 6 speeding away in his Kar. And the butler ever faithful.

That’s definitely the real Michael. Vicki wouldn’t have offered to sacrifice herself. Michael didn’t need to, because just offering was enough to convince Eleanor he was real, but there is no way that would have occurred to Vicki.

If you feel a little frustrated, you can imagine UK viewers at the time. McGoohan was attacked by critics and LITERALLY by fans, and he moved to the US and refused to talk about The Prisoner ever since. There’s a documentary, “In My Mind”, showing posthumous footage of what a dick Patrick was to a young interviewer who tried to pin him down on the question years later-Everything fine until That Question, and he began pretending to be No. 6 asked why he resigned.

16:15 Previously he played number 8. But 48 is 6 times 8, so maybe there is some connection… 18:55 Also, he doesn’t seem to care where he’s going - he tried thumbing a lift in both directions.

13:02 Every credited cast member in this episode has appeared in at least one previous episode of The Prisoner. Not sure if that’s significant. It might be tricky to track down, but the film 'Kings and Desperate Men' reunites Patrick McGoohan and Alexis Kanner.

Thanks for going on this ride and taking us along with you. This final episode, doesn't explain anything at all, it's just a bit if surrealism, but who cares, it works. The licensed (and original) music was great... and I knew you would have to mute it all out so I watched it myself a few days ago leading up to this. It is totally surreal (what was Monkey-Man-Number-1? Some kind of insane 6-clone?) But I am glad that those four got to "escape".

'All you need is love' comes from the album 'Magical Mystery Tour', which was released in 1967. Much of The Prisoner was filmed in 1967, so obviously it was chosen for its contemporary nature. The rocket isn't meant to be the same rocket from the earlier episode, nor is no 48 meant to be number 8. (Patrick just liked Kanner's performance from the western episode so wrote the role of no 48 for him specifically) As to the meaning of it all, that's always been open to interpretation, along with his identity. Was he John Drake, or was he someone else? Depends on which sources you read, though it seems more likely that's who the Prisoner was meant to be despite Patrick saying otherwise. Patrick 'fled' to America followin the not so good reception of the finale and would, amongst other things, appear in four episodes of 'Columbo' as the murderer in each one. (Four different characters, not the same character across all 4) Do not watch the 2009 remake of 'The Prisoner', it's not good (Not Patrick in it, not Portmeirion, it's ermm, just dire)

So, on a metaphorical level, Number One is Number Six. But how can that possibly work on the level of the story narrative? My hypothesis (without evidence) follows. 1. The Seltzman device (“Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling”) can swap two minds, but the prototype, ten years earlier, could only _copy_ one mind into another brain. During that early adventure, our hero’s mind is copied into a fellow agent. 2. That other agent cannot return to the life he “remembers”. His activities might interfere with our hero’s, so an inner circle of the Agency places him in The Village, in administration. His mindset is one of absolute loyalty, so he agrees. 3. This other agent ascends the ranks and eventually becomes Number One. At some point, he takes advantage of new surgical techniques to restore his face to his self image, as we saw was possible with Curtis in “Schizoid Man”. 4. When our hero resigns, Number One has to know WHY. Number One would never resign. He is absolutely loyal to the higher-ups. What makes Six different, when he is supposed to be the same? 5. Finally, in “Fall Out”, it looks like Number One is trying to tempt Number Six into taking his place. … You did a great job with the videos. Be seeing you. 👌

I suppose the Prisoner is contemporary with 2001 and a few other films with surreal endings . The outcome was either going to be he freed himself or stayed a number and I'm still not sure . I can understand why it's still a much respected series . There were some terrific actors and unique ideas in a beautifully exotic setting . I can also understand why mainstream viewers found it incomprehensible . It's been an interesting opportunity to see it with you and hear your thoughts through the weeks . Definitely here for Blackadder next week , it'll be extra interesting if you haven't seen the first series .

Interesting fact: The number in the prisoner's house in London is 1. You can see that in the other episodes when number 6 comes back to his house (many happy returns and do not forsake me, oh my darling). So he was always the number one, because he is an individual. I love the play they do with "I" and "One", everytime he says "I", everybody starts shouting "I" too, because extremist individualism does not allows you to hear others. His address in London is 1 Buckingham Place, the building is still there. Too bad you didn't get that he was number one in the first view, but this happened all across the world when the series aired, and there was no VCR back then to pause and review!

The viewer... response in 1967 had McGoohan leaving... the country. 🤯 "Who is Number 1?" "You are Number 6", unless it is "You are, Number 6". The sets were recycled, interestingly enough. The original episode count was 7. The network wanted a full season (e.g. 26). They agreed on 17, but plot ideas and budget did run thin. The use of the songs almost feels antithetical to the story. Bit that's probably the reason, LOL. Beat of all, the shot of No6 down the road just became "prisoner"... he never did leave, oddly.

Wonderful reaction Shelma, and sorry about the heat!!! I’ll save my comments for part II but let me just say what an amazing cast we have again here. In addition to McGoohan and Leo McKern continuing their tour de force from the prior episode, we have the awesomely intense Alexis Kanner as number 48, who burns up the screen whether he’s silent as in the western episode or loud as we have here, and then Kennith Griffith as president/speaker of the session regally moving us forward. I watched this as a child in the early 1970’s and Griffith’s perfect balance between both leading but being himself a prisoner to the chanting assembly always stayed with me. Individuals like number 6 and number 48 play to their own tune (quite literally for number 48) while the powerful speaker and assembly are mindless followers with a thin veneer of faux strength.
